What would Warren Johnson whisper in Greg Anderson’s ear on race day?

Everyone knows that KB Racing is a very different operation from Warren Johnson Racing, but the Professor and Greg Anderson share a lot of history. If there were such a thing as a Pro Stock dojo, Greg Anderson came out of Warren Johnson’s.

2021 marks the year that Anderson surpassed Johnson in Pro Stock wins, a record that only Anderson seemed capable of beating. With that goal out of the way, what advice does Johnson have for Anderson?

“From a driver's perspective, you got to get rid of what I call 'clutter.' You have to get rid of everything in your mind that isn't related to winning that race. You're not going to worry about when you're going to buy a new car, if the lawn was mowed, or if the house payment was made. You get all of that out of your mind. You just concentrate on winning the race and you'll be much more successful.”

So is Johnson rooting for Anderson this weekend?

“I would enjoy if [Greg Anderson] won the race more than Erica. He worked here for 10 or 12 years. He was here every day, and whatever it took—he did. He had an accelerated learning curve of racing.”

“He should have had this Championship wrapped up three races ago, but the fact that he was thinking about either winning the most amount of races or whatever his focus was on, it wasn't where it should've been. Now that's behind him, I think he'll do much better."

What will it take for him to surpass Erica Enders this weekend?

"If you look at beating somebody, you're taking that on a personal level, that means your eye is not on the ball, and on winning the race. The other lane should be absolutely totally inert. You don't even think about it.”

What are Anderson’s strengths in situations like this with multiple racers gunning for him and the whole world watching?

“I would say the strength that he has is the amount of quality employee has supporting him. He has done well at hiring the right people.”

That's high praise considering Johnson once counted Anderson as one of the quality employees he had supporting him in his Championship hunts, and he knows first-hand that's a tough advantage to overvalue.
