Denso NHRA Sonoma Nationals presented by PowerEdge Sunday preview
The NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series concludes the two-race Western Swing with a stop at Sonoma Raceway for the Denso NHRA Sonoma Nationals presented by PowerEdge.
The event is No. 12 of 20 races this year in the NHRA Mission Foods Pro series, and it will includes Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock, and Pro Stock Motorcycle, well as five NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series classes.
After two amazing days of qualifying, it’s time to hand out Wally trophies in Sonoma. Track records took a beating on Friday and Saturday especially in Top Fuel, where Brittany Force drove to a 343.16 mph speed, the fastest in the history of the sport. Dallas Glenn also re-set the track record in Pro Stock with a 6.471-second run in his RAD Torque Systems Camaro.
Now, it’s time for racers to focus less on performance and more on consistency as they face a track in Sonoma where conditions can change drastically and often.
Force will not have an easy draw in round one as she faces Shawn Langdon, who struggled in qualifying with four aborted attempts. Regardless, Langdon represents a formidable opponent as both racers fight for position ahead of the regular season re-set.
Top Fuel’s other marquee match-up pairs Clay Millican against Justin Ashley in a race featuring two more legit championship contenders.
The Funny Car field is stacked with 15 of 16 cars qualified in the three second zone including Matt Hagan, who took the top spot with a 3.861. Hagan does not have an easy draw as he’s paired against Jeff Diehl, who ran 4.066.
Ron Capps, winner of Saturday’s Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge, takes on Gainesville winner Chad Green while Daniel Wilkerson, who had a dramatic engine explosion on Friday, has returned for a match against Bob Tasca III.
The Pro Stock field is also very close with barely a tenth of a second separating the entire field. Low qualifier Glenn has a scheduled race against veteran Kenny Delco while points leader Greg Anderson will race past Sonoma winner Chris McGaha.
The Elite team has continued their recent resurgence and perhaps their best hope for a victory lies with Greg Stanfied, who qualified No. 3 and races former Factory Stock racer Stephen Bell in round one.
The Pro Stock Motorcycle class will continue to feature the rival Vance & Hines and Matt Smith Racing teams. Yesterday, Smith got the upper hand with a $25,000 win in the GETTRX Pro Stock Motorcycle All-Star Callout over Richard Gadson.
Gadson is the top qualifier for the first time in his career and he’ll race newcomer Brad Hawkes in the opening round. Smith, the defending event winner, races against Charles Poskey.
The jam-packed schedule will also include final eliminations for racers in the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series categories of Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, and Top Sportsman.
