From a starting field that numbers in the thousands, the process to ultimately crown four national champions in the NHRA Summit E.T. Racing Series is well underway. The NHRA Summit Racing Series that is contested across North America forms the world’s largest motorsports program in terms of racer participation. Throughout the year, participating NHRA member tracks host regularly scheduled events and award points. At the end of the season, each track selects a team of racers from among its top points finishers to represent the track in a divisional Summit Racing Series Finals. Competitors, running in different categories based on performance, race until a champion is crowned in each category. Points totals also are tallied for team honors.

The four individual winners from each division are then invited to Pomona for the Auto Club NHRA Finals where they race each other for national championships in Super Pro, Pro E.T., Sportsman, and Super Pro Bike/Sled. In addition to the race winners, the eight car/bike field will also include four wild card racers selected during via special lottery drawing.

Recently, NHRA announcers Brian Lohnes and Alan Reinhart hosted an online drawing to determine the wild card positions for the 2020 Summit E.T. Racing Series Finals, and the winners are Division 6 (Super Pro), Division 5 (Pro E.T.), Division 7 (Sportsman), and Division 2 (Super Pro Bike/Sled). Each division uses its own method to select the wild card winner although it is often the Race of Champions winner.

Last year, Michael Sturgill (Super Pro), Chris Johnston (Pro E.T.), Ryan Montford (Sportsman), and Jim Werre (Super Pro Bike/Sled) were crowned as the Summit Series national champions following a heated battle in Pomona.

The first Summit E.T. Racing Series Finals event of the season will be the Division 6 Finals held at Firebird Raceway in Boise, Idaho, Sept. 4-6. Other stops include Division 1 (Numidia Dragway, Sept. 17-20, Division 2 (Rockingham Dragway, Oct. 8-11), Division 3 (Lucas Oil Raceway at Indianapolis, Sept. 18-20); Division 4 (Texas Motorplex, Sept. 11-13); Division 5 (Heartland Motorsports Park, Sept. 18-20), and Division 7 (Auto Club Famoso Raceway, Oct. 2-4).
