It took just one day for South Georgia Motorsports Park to become the fastest track in all of drag racing after Shawn Langdon posted a record 345.00 mph speed in his Kalitta Air dragster during Friday qualifying.

The Langdon provided the biggest highlight during the opening day of the NHRA Southern Nationals but there were many others. Langdon is also the provisional low qualifier in Top Fuel with a 3.72 and he is joined in the 3.7s by Tony Stewart, Doug Kalitta, Maddi Gordon, and Billy Torrence.

Saturday’s activities have been delayed due to overnight rain with the gate of SGMP scheduled to open at noon.

In the Funny Car class, J.R. Todd joined his Kalitta Motorsports teammate atop the charts with a 3.887 in his DHL Toyota Supra. Todd also ran a 339.29 top speed, which will become the new SGMP track record.

After two sessions, the top half of the Funny Car field also includes Jordan Vandergriff, Matt Hagan, Chad Green, Cruz Pedregon, Austin Prock, Hunter Green, and Dave Richards, all of whom have run 3.959 or quicker.

The Pro Stock field is led, not surprisingly by Greg Anderson with a 6.498 with KB Titan teammate Eric Latino close behind at 6.508 followed by Aaron Stanfield, Greg Stanfield, Cody Coughlin, Cody Anderson, Matt Hartford, and Jeg Coughlin Jr. occupying the top spots.

In Pro Stock Motorcycle, Matt Smith made what is so far the quickest run of the season with a 6.699 on his Denso Buell. Smith leads two-time world champ Gaige Herrera, who ran 6.723, and Herrera’s teammate, Richard Gadson, at 6.730. After two runs there are 14 bikes in the sixes and six riders have topped 200-mph.

The South Georgia race also features the latest round of the JBS Pro Mod series as well as Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competition in Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Right Trailers Top Dragster.
