Friday qualifying at the Dodge NHRA Great Lakes Nationals presented by Mopar is taking full advantage of a picture-perfect Michigan day for drag racing. Cool air, sunshine, and a well-prepared U.S. 131 Motorsports Park racing surface have combined to create the kind of conditions racers dream about — and the time slips are rewarding the fans who came through the gates to see it happen.

Fans continue to pour into the historic facility as the numbers on the scoreboards keep getting quicker and faster. From record-setting runs in Flexjet Factory Stock Showdown to an incredibly tight Pro Stock Motorcycle field, the first qualifying sessions have already delivered standout performances.

Q1—Pro Stock Motorcycle

Angie Smith powered to a 6.737-second pass at 196.51 mph to lead a tightly packed Pro Stock Motorcycle field Friday at the Dodge NHRA Great Lakes Nationals presented by Mopar at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park.

Angie Smith set the early benchmark in Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying Friday, racing to a 6.7377-second pass at 196.51 mph to take the provisional No. 1 position at the Dodge NHRA Great Lakes Nationals presented by Mopar.

Smith put together a strong run from start to finish, covering the first 60 feet in 1.0479 seconds before reaching the eighth-mile in 4.3005 seconds at 163.87 mph. Her 6.7377 at the finish line was enough to narrowly edge Matt Smith for the top spot as NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series competition returned to Michigan.

Matt Smith was just .0026-second behind, recording a 6.7403 at 197.02 mph to sit second after the opening qualifying session.

Richard Gadson made it three riders separated by less than a hundredth of a second, powering to a 6.7468 at 200.00 mph. Gadson was also one of two riders to reach the 200-mph mark during the session.

Gaige Herrera matched Gadson's speed with a 200.00-mph run of his own, recording a 6.7603 to take the fourth position.

Ryan Oehler was fifth following a 6.7843 at 196.76 mph, while Ronald Procopio Jr. was close behind with a 6.7885 at 191.16 mph.

Chase Van Sant recorded a 6.8108 at 197.11 mph, while John Hall's 6.8178 at 179.00 mph placed him next in the qualifying order.

Steve Johnson followed with a 6.8323 at 195.99 mph, and Geno Scali recorded a 6.8531 at 197.02 mph. Clayton Howey's 6.8940 at 195.06 mph and Marc Ingwersen's 6.9332 at 192.55 mph rounded out the riders who made six-second passes in the first session.

Mathieu Dube recorded a 7.5434 at 175.64 mph, while Mark Paquette and Wesley Wells encountered trouble and did not make representative full-track runs, posting an 11.4723 and 12.1787, respectively.

With only .0226-second separating Angie Smith, Matt Smith, Gadson and Herrera at the top of the order, the opening session established a tightly packed battle for the No. 1 qualifying position as Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying continues at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park.

For Angie Smith, however, the first shot down the Michigan quarter-mile belonged to her: 6.7377 seconds, 196.51 mph, and the provisional No. 1 spot.

Matt Hartford made the most of ideal Michigan conditions Friday, racing to a 6.5166-second pass at 209.79 mph to take the provisional No. 1 qualifying position in Pro Stock at the Dodge NHRA Great Lakes Nationals presented by Mopar at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park.

Hartford's run was strong throughout the racetrack. His Total Seal Chevrolet Camaro covered the first 60 feet in .9786 second and reached the eighth-mile in 4.1879 seconds at 168.29 mph before stopping the clocks with the quickest elapsed time of the opening session.

Greg Anderson was Hartford's closest challenger, recording a 6.5218 at 209.11 mph to sit second, just .0052 second behind the provisional leader.

Dallas Glenn followed with a 6.5290 at 209.99 mph to take the third spot, while Cody Anderson was just behind him with a 6.5312 at 207.85 mph.

Greg Stanfield continued the tightly packed qualifying order with a 6.5345 at 209.59 mph, placing him fifth. Matt Latino was sixth with a 6.5385 at 209.50 mph and also recorded a perfect .0000 reaction time on his opening run.

Erica Enders sits seventh after a 6.5456 at 210.38 mph. Her 210.38-mph speed was matched by Jeg Coughlin Jr., who followed with a 6.5613 to take the eighth position.

Kenny Delco recorded a 6.5908 at 208.72 mph to sit ninth after the first session.

The remaining competitors will be looking to capitalize on the favorable conditions when qualifying resumes. Troy Coughlin Jr., Aaron Stanfield, Eric Latino and Shane Tucker were unable to make representative full-track runs, while Deric Kramer did not record an elapsed time.

Hartford's performance highlighted just how quick the U.S. 131 Motorsports Park surface could be on a picture-perfect Michigan Friday. The top six cars were separated by only .0219 second, setting the stage for an intense battle for qualifying position as the weekend continues.

After one session, however, everyone is chasing Matt Hartford and his 6.5166 at 209.79 mph.

J.R. Todd's 3.8930-second blast at 334.57 mph leads Friday’s opening Funny Car qualifying session at the Dodge NHRA Great Lakes Nationals presented by Mopar, where a fast U.S. 131 Motorsports Park surface rewarded aggression — until several teams found its limit.

J.R. Todd emerged quickest from an eventful opening Funny Car qualifying session Friday at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park, powering to a 3.8930-second pass at 334.57 mph to take the provisional No. 1 position at the Dodge NHRA Great Lakes Nationals presented by Mopar.

The opening pairs quickly demonstrated that Michigan's cool conditions and well-prepared racing surface could produce big numbers.

Dan Wilkerson delivered the second-quickest run of the session with a 3.9171 at 321.20 mph, followed closely by Austin Prock, who clocked a 3.9228 at 331.13 mph.

Spencer Hyde continued his impressive performance with a 3.9623 at 317.57 mph, while Ron Capps closed the session with a 3.9479 at 331.13 mph. Based strictly on elapsed time, that puts Capps fourth and Hyde fifth among the completed runs.

But the story of the session was as much about where the track's limits were as the numbers it produced.

Early in the session, veteran crew chief Dickie Venables observed that the U.S. 131 surface appeared capable of handling significantly more power. Almost immediately afterward, the Funny Car tuners began testing that theory.

Jordan Vandergriff and Jack Beckman were among the first to discover where the boundary might be. Both cars attempted to apply more power than the track would accept and failed to make representative runs, with Beckman recording a 9.9346 and Vandergriff a 14.3756.

The final pair provided an even clearer demonstration.

Capps successfully negotiated the racetrack, putting down his 3.9479 at 331.13 mph to move into the quick half of the field. In the opposite lane, Matt Hagan attacked the surface but overpowered it, slowing to a 14.7281.

It was a fitting conclusion to a session that began with teams wondering just how much the Michigan track could take.

Among the other representative runs, Terry Haddock recorded a strong 4.0367 at 314.47 mph. Jeff Diehl followed with a 4.0731 at 314.03 mph, while Joey Haas ran 4.0970 at 273.56 mph.

Several other teams will be looking for significant improvement in the next qualifying session after failing to complete representative runs.

After Q1, the quickest completed runs by E.T. are Todd, 3.8930; Wilkerson, 3.9171; Prock, 3.9228; Capps, 3.9479; Hyde, 3.9623; Haddock, 4.0367; Diehl, 4.0731; and Haas, 4.0970.

The takeaway from the opening Funny Car session was clear: U.S. 131 will take plenty of power. Finding exactly how much may be the challenge of the day.

It's officially Big Speed Friday at the Dodge NHRA Great Lakes Nationals presented by Mopar.

Tony Stewart came out on top of a fast opening Top Fuel qualifying session at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park, powering to a 3.714-second run to take the provisional No. 1 qualifying position.

Shawn Langdon grabbed the No. 2 spot with a 3.732, putting another championship contender near the top of the order as teams took advantage of outstanding conditions in Michigan.

Leah Pruett completed the provisional top three with a 3.743, giving the Tony Stewart Racing camp two of the three quickest cars following the first session.

But while Stewart owned the quickest elapsed time, the biggest number on the scoreboard belonged to Billy Torrence.

Torrence and the CAPCO Contractors team, with Bobby Lagana helping lead the effort, thundered to a 3.744-second pass at 341.43 mph, the fastest run ever recorded in Michigan. The spectacular speed put Torrence fourth after Q1 and added another milestone to a Friday already filled with exceptional performances.

Justin Ashley was fifth with a 3.748, followed by Will Smith's 3.762. Kyle Wurtzel ran a 3.799, and Shawn Reed's 3.801 rounded out the top eight displayed on the qualifying board.

The session wasn't as kind to everyone. Several teams were unable to make representative full-track runs and will get another opportunity to capitalize on a U.S. 131 Motorsports Park surface that has already demonstrated its ability to hold enormous horsepower.

After Q1, the order begins Stewart, 3.714; Langdon, 3.732; Pruett, 3.743; Torrence, 3.744; Ashley, 3.748; Smith, 3.762; Wurtzel, 3.799; and Reed, 3.801.

It's Big Speed Friday in Michigan, and Top Fuel is delivering.

Q2 — Pro Stock Motorcycle

Ryan Oehler delivered the quickest Pro Stock Motorcycle run of the day with a 6.7190-second blast at 200.80 mph in Q2, jumping past opening-session leader Angie Smith and taking the provisional No. 1 position at the Dodge NHRA Great Lakes Nationals presented by Mopar.

Ryan Oehler made a major move in the second Pro Stock Motorcycle qualifying session Friday at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park, powering to a 6.7190-second pass at 200.80 mph to produce the quickest elapsed time of the weekend so far and take over the provisional No. 1 qualifying position.

Oehler's run was impressive throughout the quarter-mile. He covered the first 60 feet in 1.0684 seconds, reached the eighth-mile in 4.3021 seconds at 165.02 mph, and continued accelerating through the finish line at more than 200 mph.

Angie Smith was second-quickest in Q2, running a 6.7370 which also produced the fastest speed of the session. Matt Smith was second-quickest in Q2, running a 6.740 

Richard Gadson followed with a 6.7647 at 198.59 mph, putting him third in the session.

Gaige Herrera was fifth-quickest in Q2 with a 6.7785 at 198.15 mph, followed by Ronald Procopio Jr.'s 6.7820 at 198.15 mph.

John Hall ran a 6.7901 at 197.98 mph, Steve Johnson posted a 6.8037 at 194.64 mph, and Clayton Howey followed with a 6.8582 at 195.31 mph. Geno Scali recorded a 6.9056 at 196.59 mph, and Marc Ingwersen ran a 7.0644 at 191.00 mph. Chase Van Sant encountered trouble and slowed to a 28.9340-second run.

Q2 — Pro Stock

Dallas Glenn leads Pro Stock Q2 with 6.5342 as field tightens in Michigan

Dallas Glenn delivered the quickest run of the second Pro Stock qualifying session with a 6.5342 at 209.50 mph, leading Greg Stanfield and Jeg Coughlin Jr. as the naturally aspirated cars continued to take advantage of strong conditions at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park.

Dallas Glenn led the way in the second Pro Stock qualifying session Friday at the Dodge NHRA Great Lakes Nationals presented by Mopar, powering his Chevrolet Camaro to a 6.5342-second pass at 209.50 mph.

Glenn's run was the quickest of Q2 based strictly on elapsed time, putting him just ahead of Greg Stanfield, who delivered a 6.5345 at 209.21 mph. Only three ten-thousandths of a second separated the two quickest cars of the session.

Jeg Coughlin Jr. was next with a 6.5367 at 209.69 mph, giving Q2 three cars separated by just .0025 second.

Greg Anderson followed in fourth with a 6.5443 at 209.01 mph, while Matt Hartford, who led the opening session with a 6.5166, recorded a 6.5510 at 209.79 mph in Q2.

Matt Latino was sixth-quickest at 6.5584 and 209.21 mph, followed by Erica Enders with a 6.5762 at 209.01 mph.

Eric Latino posted a 6.5921 at 209.01 mph, Kenny Delco followed with a 6.6028 at 206.90 mph, and Aaron Stanfield recorded a 6.6024 at 195.40 mph. Based strictly on E.T., that actually places Stanfield ahead of Delco in the Q2 order.

Deric Kramer made a solid 6.6185-second run at 207.76 mph, while Troy Coughlin Jr. posted a 6.5500 at 209.11 mph. That 6.5500 slots Coughlin fifth in Q2, ahead of Hartford's 6.5510.

Cody Anderson slowed to an 8.5831 at 108.85 mph, while Shane Tucker encountered trouble and recorded an 18.0842.

While Glenn earned bragging rights for the quickest run of Q2, Hartford's 6.5166 from the opening session remains the quickest elapsed time shown from the first two sessions, with Greg Anderson's earlier 6.5218 and Dallas Glenn's earlier 6.5290 also keeping them firmly in the battle for the top qualifying positions.

Q2 reinforced just how tight Pro Stock is in Michigan: Glenn, Stanfield and Coughlin were separated by only .0025 second at the top of the session.

Cruz Pedregon leads Funny Car Q2 with 3.8865 as Michigan track delivers again

Cruz Pedregon powered to a 3.8865-second pass at 327.51 mph to lead the second Funny Car qualifying session at the Dodge NHRA Great Lakes Nationals presented by Mopar, edging J.R. Todd and Austin Prock in another quick session at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park.

Cruz Pedregon made the quickest run of Funny Car's second qualifying session Friday, powering to a 3.8865 at 327.51 mph as the strong conditions continued at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park.

Pedregon's run came after a 3.9341-second pass by Jack Beckman and immediately reset the Q2 benchmark. It would hold through the remainder of the session.

J.R. Todd, who led Q1 with a 3.8930 at 334.57 mph, came extremely close to Pedregon in Q2, recording a 3.8988 at 337.33 mph. Todd's 337.33 was the fastest speed of the session shown in the results and gave him another strong full-track run after his opening-session performance.

Austin Prock was right behind Todd with a 3.9095 at 331.61 mph, while Dan Wilkerson continued his strong Friday with a 3.9038 at 321.20 mph. Based strictly on elapsed time, that puts Wilkerson third in Q2 and Prock fourth.

Spencer Hyde was fifth-quickest with a 3.9169 at 331.13 mph, followed by Alexis DeJoria's 3.9246 at 331.86 mph and Ron Capps' 3.9306 at 326.80 mph.

Jack Beckman was next at 3.9341 at 321.89 mph, with Chad Green close behind at 3.9478 at 329.91 mph. Matt Hagan rebounded from his troubled Q1 attempt with a 3.9610 at 327.27 mph.

Terry Haddock also produced a solid full-track run of 3.9802 at 314.47 mph, narrowly edging Dave Richards' 3.9805 at 316.90 mph. Hunter Green recorded a 4.0832 at 305.50 mph.

Q2 — Top Fuel

Doug Kalitta blasts to 3.682 to take over Top Fuel qualifying in Michigan

Michigan native Doug Kalitta delivered the quickest run of Friday’s second Top Fuel qualifying session with a 3.6828 at 334.82 mph, moving ahead of Shawn Langdon as Kalitta Motorsports swept the top two spots at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park.

Doug Kalitta saved one of Friday’s biggest performances for the second Top Fuel qualifying session, powering to a 3.6828-second pass at 334.82 mph to take the provisional No. 1 qualifying position at the Dodge NHRA Great Lakes Nationals presented by Mopar.

Racing in his home state as NHRA returned to Michigan for its first national event in 66 years, Kalitta was strong from the instant he hit the throttle. His dragster covered the first 60 feet in .8321 second, reached the eighth-mile in 2.9647 seconds at 297.23 mph, and charged through the finish line at 334.82 mph.

Kalitta’s run was comfortably the quickest of Q2.

Teammate Shawn Langdon made it a Kalitta Motorsports one-two punch, recording a 3.6988 at 339.37 mph. Langdon's 339.37-mph speed was also the fastest of the representative runs in the session.

Will Smith was third-quickest in Q2 with a strong 3.7369 at 333.58 mph, narrowly edging Billy Torrence, who ran a 3.7363 at 334.57 mph. Based strictly on elapsed time, however, Torrence's 3.7363 is quicker than Smith's 3.7369, putting Torrence third and Smith fourth in the session.

Kyle Wurtzel continued an impressive Friday with a 3.7589 at 325.38 mph, while Clay Millican followed closely with a 3.7624 at 334.08 mph.

Antron Brown rebounded with a 3.7798 at 331.86 mph, followed by Spencer Massey's 3.7922 at 327.27 mph and Shawn Reed's 3.8127 at 317.57 mph.

Josh Hart also made a representative run with a 3.8267 at 332.35 mph.

The rest of the field ran into trouble. Tony Schumacher slowed to a 4.4375, Leah Pruett to a 4.5691, Justin Ashley to a 4.9108, Kyle Satenstein to an 8.0890, Maddi Gordon to an 8.3634, and Tony Stewart — who had led Q1 with a 3.7141 — slowed to an 8.6756.

After Stewart led the opening session, Q2 belonged decisively to Kalitta. His 3.6828 at 334.82 mph moved him to the top of the overall qualifying order, with Langdon's 3.6988 giving Kalitta Motorsports the provisional top two positions heading into Saturday.
