Controlling a Funny Car with the throttle during a tire-smoking run is among drag racing’s most demanding tests. Every stab of the pedal asks the tires to regain traction while 12,000 horsepower wait to overpower them again. The driver must judge grip, direction and closing speed in fractions of a second, all while the car bucks, drifts and tries to escape its lane. Spencer Hyde and Chad Green refused to surrender. Each repeatedly lifted, gathered the car and attacked the throttle again, turning their first-round matchup into an unforgettable old-school pedalfest in which determination mattered as much as performance.
