Southeast Division dominates JEGS Allstars team competition
In one of the most dominating performances in the 41-year history of the JEGS Allstars competition, the team from the NHRA Southeast Division claimed their ninth overall title, tying the record set by the Northeast Division team last season.
The Southeast Division team put six of their eight racers into the final round and scored four victories to rack up an incredible score of 1,600 points. The Division 2 squad officially locked up the title at the end of the semifinal round and then continued to add to their total in the final rounds. The team from the North Central Division finished a distant second with 1,000 points, while the host South Central Division was third at 900 points.
The Southeast Division, previous champions in 1990, 1991, 1993, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2015, and 2021, were led by Monty Bogan, Steve Foley, Jim Perry, and Donald Webb, who scored wins in Comp, Stock, Super Gas, and Super Street, respectively. Larry Leazer and Bradley Snowball also chipped in with runner-up finishes in Super Stock and Super Comp.
After the opening round of competition on Friday, the Division 2 and Division 5 teams were tied at 600 points while the home team from Division 4 was still very much in the mix with 500 points. Incredibly, all six Division 2 racers advanced to the final round, giving the team an insurmountable lead.
Bogan scored the win in Comp over Division 7 racer Joshua Lee with an 8.588 against his 9.10 index. Lee got off the starting line first, but Bogan was able to run him down.
In Stock, Steve Foley secured his first JEGS Allstars win when he topped third-generation racer Landon Emmons of Division 4 in the final. Foley was able to cruise to a 10.023 on his 9.91 dial after Emmons slowed in his Lucas Oil Products Camaro.
Perry, who scored back-to-back JEGS Allstars wins in Super Comp in 2003-04, added a Super Gas title after Division 1’s Charlie Kenopic red-lighted by two-thousandths of a second. Perry made it official with a 9.931 pass in his Chevy S-10 truck.
Webb did his part to help the Division 2 team with a 10.903 to 10.882 double-breakout win against Division 4’s John Liebham.
The Division 3 team owes a lot of credit for it’s success to Jeremy Duncan, Blake Peavler, and Dennis Dowson, who won in Super Stock, Top Dragster, and Top Sportsman, respectively. Duncan ran a 9.406 on his 9.39 dial to put away Division 2 racer Larry Leazer, who was close behind.
Peavler drove his dragster to a 6.180 against his 6.15 dial for the win against Division 5 racer Mark Grame, who broke out with a 6.566 on his 6.58 dial.
Dowson got a free pass in the Top Sportsman final after defending JEGS Allstars champ Curt Fredrich fouled by two-thousandths of a second. For the win, Dowson drove his supercharged Plymouth to a 6.272 against his 6.24 dial.
In Super Comp, Tanner Thorp of the Division 4 team drove to an 8.894 to score a double-breakout win against Division 2’s Bradley Snowball, who was quicker with an 8.853.
The Alcohol Team title went to the Western Region, which was led by Top Alcohol Dragster winner Joey Severance. Now a five-time JEGS Allstars winner, Severance drove to a 5.269 in the final after Matt Cummings of the North Central Region, slowed in the final.
Jim Whiteley, a last-minute addition to the field as a blocker, won his third JEGS Allstars title and first in Top Alcohol Funny Car when he beat Brian Hough in the final, 5.469 to 5.510. Whiteley’s previous wins were in Top Alcohol Dragster.
Each of the winners of the JEGS Allstars race will now be automatically eligible to return for next year’s event in Dallas.
