Unfinished Business

Six-time NHRA Pro Stock world champion Warren Johnson will take on five-time U.S. Nationals champ Ed “the Ace” McCulloch in the final round of the legend-on-legend Unfinished Business competition at the Amalie Motor Oil NHRA Gatornationals.

Johnson, a nine-time Gatornationals champ, clearly knows his way around doors cars as his specially-wrapped Toyota ran in the 14-second zone for the second straight time to beat three-time Top Fuel champ Shirley Muldowney, 14.591 to 14.934. Johnson, who beat Terry Vance Friday, also got off to a slightly better launch, .351 to .366 over Muldowney, who won her Friday grudge match with Don Garlits.

McCulloch, who beats Funny Car rival Don Prudhomme in round one Friday, had the best reaction time of the competition so far with a .211 and will need it against W.J. after clocking just a 14.99 in beating Joe Amato’s slowing 16.04.

“The only guy out who knows how to do something to a door car is Warren Johnson,” said a suspicious McCulloch. “How about we switch cars for the final?’

“I’m not doing anything; it’s just a well-built car,” said a straight-faced Johnson as NHRA official mock-inspected his car for illegal modifications.  “I just get in, put the seat belt on, and go. If I beat him in the final I’m glad to switch cars with him.”

Intrigue. Suspense. Drama. We’ve got it all. The final round is scheduled to take place tonight.
