Fans of NHRA Championship Drag Racing are in for a treat this weekend at the NHRA Route 66 Nationals where 40 11,000-hp nitro-powered cars will be competing with 21 Top Fuel cars and 19 Funny Cars competing for 16 qualifying spots in their respective categories.

The fuel dragster count is one of the largest in nearly five years and with 19 Funny Cars also entered, race fans attending the event are in for a high-powered weekend of speed as the second half of the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series season kicks off. It’s the first time since the final events of 2016 that the total nitro car count has reached 40 cars.

Fans of the gasoline-powered Pro Stock doorcars and two-wheeled Pro Stock Motorcycles will also witness dramatic qualifying action as 19 Pro Stockers and 18 Pro Stock Motorcycles will be trying to qualify for the 16-car fields.

“We are excited to see the numbers of teams participating this year at Route 66 Dragway,” said NHRA Vice President - Racing Administration Josh Peterson. “Fans are in store for some intense competition all weekend long as teams fight for a coveted spot within the field of 16.”

Fans will also be treated to an exciting weekend that starts with "Friday Night On Fire," an ultimate sensory overload under the lights. The special nitro session starts at 8:45 p.m., giving fans the chance to see the thrilling ground-shaking, nitro-fueled flames of the standout Top Fuel and Funny Cars at night. That leads into "All-Star Saturday" before winners are crowned in the professional classes on "Championship Sunday."

Clay Millican (Top Fuel), Robert Hight (Funny Car), Jeg Coughlin Jr. (Pro Stock) and Matt Smith (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were last year’s winners of the event that will be televised on FOX Sports 1, including final eliminations coverage starting at 5:30 p.m. (ET) on Sunday, June 2.
