Fifteen racers in Top Fuel, Funny Car, and Pro Stock clinched their spots in the 2019 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship playoffs as the result of racing at the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals.
Only the Labor Day weekend at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. Only the top 10 points earned in each class are then eligible to take part in the six-race Countdown playoffs that begin Sept. 12-15 at the Mopar Express Lane NHRA Nationals Presented by Pennzoil in Reading, Pa., and go through the Auto Club NHRA Finals in Pomona in November.
In Top Fuel, Antron Brown, Clay Millican, Brittany Force, Doug Kalitta, Mile Salinas, and event winner Leah Pritchett added their named to the big Countdown board. bringing to seven the number of clinched berths.
Five Top Fuel drivers -- Austin Prock, Richie Crampton, Terry McMillen, Scott Palmer, and Billy Torrence -- will duel in Indy for the three remaining spots.
In Funny Car, Matt Hagan, J.R. Todd, and Shawn Langdon all clinched berths, meaning that nine of 10 positions have been filled. Tim Wilkerson and Cruz Pedregon will fight for the remaining lone spot.
In Pro Stock, the Brainerd additions of event winner Jason Line, Deric Kramer, Jeg Coughlin Jr., Erica Enders, and Chris McGaha also took Pro Stock to nine filled berths. Nine drivers -- Kenny Delco, Fernando Cuadra Sr, Val Smeland, Rodger Brogdon, Alan Prusiensky, Fernando Cuadra Jr., Shane Tucker, Richard Freeman, and Steve Graham -- all remain mathematically capable of securing the final position.
Only four of 10 positions in Pro Stock Motorcycle -- which did not compete in Brainerd -- have been filled entering the final event.
