The first name on the big board of qualifiers for the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series Countdown to the Championship playoffs was added this weekend at the NHRA New England Nationals when reigning Top Fuel champion Steve Torrence was officially recognized for clinching his berths as a result of  competition at the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Nationals. Five-time Pro Stock Motorcycle titlist Andrew Hines also has qualified for the post-season, which will be officially recognized at the Dodge Mile-High NHRA Nationals Presented By Pennzoil, the next event at which the motorcycles compete.

The NHRA regular season ends Labor Day weekend at the Chevrolet Performance U.S. Nationals in Indianapolis. Only the top 10 points earned in each class are then eligible to take part in the six-race Countdown playoffs that begin Sept. 12-15 at the Mopar Express Lane NHRA Nationals Presented by Pennzoil in Reading, Pa., and go through the Auto Club NHRA Finals in Pomona in November. Counting this weekend's event and the U.S. Nationals, there are six events left for drivers to earn a spot in the Countdown.
