Rampy, Bertozzi, Wallace score at Orlando RPM Winter Warm-Up
Eight racers took home wins and the NHRA Wally trophy this weekend at the NHRA Southeast Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series season opener at Orlando Speed World Dragway.
Les Feist, Clearwater, Minn., and Donny Urban, Selma, N.C., led the way taking the win in the Hickory Enclosed Trailer Sales Top Dragster class and the Stott’s Ford Top Sportsman class respectively. Feist went up against Danny Waters Jr., Lagrange. N.C., as the pair left the line together with Feist clocking in at 6.266 seconds at 212.63 mph for the win with Waters running a 7.261 second at 182.75 mph. Urban took a close win against Travis Harvey, Burlington, N.C., running 6.707 seconds at 203.34 mph in his ’06 Cobalt to Harvey’s 6.779, 200.41 in his ’68 Camaro. This is Urbans second Top Sportsman divisional event win.
In Comp Eliminator, two of the east coast hitters went head to head for the win. David Rampy, Piedmont, Ala., ran his ’32 Altered to a 7.194 second, 181.30 mph lap to beat Frank Aragona, Freehold, N.J., in his dragster at 7.382 seconds, 167.55 mph. The win was Rampy’s 59th at the divisional level.
In Super Stock Anthony Bertozzi, Ashland, Va., and his ‘98 Grand Am, faced off against Tom Callis, Statesville N.C., in his ’69 Camaro. Callis left early and Bertozzi got his 19th divisional event win.
Jerry Wallace, Zebulon, Ga., went 11.159 seconds, 108.50 mph in his ’69 Camaro against Dick Kincaid, Navarre, Ohio, in his ’67 Chevy II for his first divisional event win in Stock.
Local racer Gene Quinn, Gainesville, Fla., was to race Raymond Miller, Spring City, Tenn., in the Super Comp final. Miller could not make the call and Quinn went down the track solo with an 8.88 second, 161.04 mph run for his first divisional event win. Super Gas saw David Griffith, Winter Garden, Fla., power his ’65 Corvette to a win over Vito Basca, Bathurst, N.B., in his ’86 Camaro. This was Griffith’s first divisional event win as well.
In Super Street Matt Weston, Hendersonville, N.C., went up against another local racer in Brendan George, Gainesville, Fla. Weston took the win in his ’70 Camaro clocking in at 10.930 seconds at 137.58 mph to George’s 10.916 at 128.40 mph.
In the NHRA Summit Jr. Drag Racing League portion of the event, Maverick Palmatier, Logan Westmoreland and Dylan MacNicol all took home wins. Palmatier defeated Ozell Brown in the 13-17 year old class, Westmoreland beat Jimmy Cavanaugh in the 10-12 group and MacNicol took out Hayden Miller for the 6-9 year old win.

PREVIEW
ORLANDO, Fla. - The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Southeast Division arrives at Orlando Speed World Dragway for the RPM Winter Warm-Up on Feb. 23-24. The event is one of 44 scheduled across the country where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The division’s Stott’s Ford Top Sportsman Series and Hickory Enclosed Trailer Sales Top Dragster Series will also be run in conjunction with the event.
Gates at Orlando Speed World Dragway open at 8 a.m. each day. Qualifying and time trials start at 9 a.m. Friday. Top Dragster, Comp Eliminator and Top Sportsman qualify Friday at 11 a.m., 2:30 and 6:00 p.m., with Pro Mod qualifying at noon, 3:30 and 7:00 p.m. Elimination rounds for all classes will begin on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and will continue throughout the day. Round 1 for Top Dragster, Comp Eliminator and Top Sportsman is set for 11:00 a.m. followed by Pro Mod.
Tickets for Orlando Speed World Dragway are $20 for Friday and $25 for Saturday. Children 10 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.
