ROCKINGHAM, N.C. – In the final results from the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing at Rockingham Dragway, a handful of home state racers joined the winner’s circle celebration.

Randy Daniels, Grantsboro, N.C., met with Larry Pritchett, Clarkrange, Tenn., in the Comp Eliminator final round. Daniels took home the divisional Wally trophy with a pass of 8.22 seconds at 533.81 mph in his ’07 Pontiac to Pritchett’s 7.914 seconds, 147.49 mph.

In the Super Gas final round, Ray Miller III, Spring City, Tenn., ended Joe Eckels day with a winning run of 9.919, 162.08. Miller maintains his championship contention.

The Moser Sportsman Shootout pitted a highly competitive matchup between the Carolinas on Saturday. Local driver Steven Furr, of Harrisburg, and Kevin Brannon, Boiling Springs, S.C., took the starting line. After an even launch, Furr pulled ahead, running 4.111, 167.88 mph in the eighth-mile to narrowly defeat Brannon and capture the Moser Sportsman Shootout championship.

In the Hickory Enclosed Trailer Top Dragster final round, Robert Houston of Newland clocked in at 6.297, 209.04, to edge out Lauren Freer at 6.825, 196.16. Mount Ulla racer Sandy Wilkins knocked out Mathew Buck, Lantana, Fla., in the Stotts Ford Top Sportsman final round, driving his ’69 Camaro to a pass of 6.617 seconds, 199.49 mph.

Brandon White, Hillsville, Va., and 2016 Lucas Oil national champion Jeff Strickland, Red Bay, Ala., won in Super Stock and Stock, respectively. White went 10.128, 126.91 mph to run down Nicholas Chiles, Fredericksburg, Va., 9.085, 141.67. Strickland held off Jeff Harrington, Kathleen, Ga., running 9.483, 135.76 to Harrington’s 10.218, 127.79.

Matt Weston and Brannon rounded out Saturday’s Lucas Oil winners. Weston, Wellford, S.C., grabbed the win against Stan Coleman, Tallassee, Ala., in Super Street running 10.895, 142.79. Brannon, Boiling Springs, S.C., defeated Frank Altilio, Apopka, Fla., in the Super Comp final round.

PREVIEW

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - Rockingham Dragway will host the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Southeast Division on Oct.  27-29. The event is one of the 45 scheduled across the country where drivers in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.  The division’s Stotts Ford Top Sportsman Series and Hickory Enclosed Trailer Top Dragster Series will run in conjunction with the event along with Pro Fuel Harleys and a 300 mph Jet Dragster. 

Highlighting Saturday’s action is the NHRA Southeast Division Moser Sportsman Shootout, a specialty event where drivers will compete in a dial-in/breakout handicap format on an eighth-mile with a $15,000 cash purse up for grabs.  The winner could pocket $5,000 along with a specially designed Moser Sportsman Shootout trophy. Eliminations begin at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Gates at Rockingham Dragway open at 8 a.m. each day. Qualifying and time trials start Friday at 3:30 p.m. and continue Saturday at 9 a.m.  Top Dragster, Comp Eliminator and Top Sportsman qualify Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m. Pro Fuel Harley qualify on Friday at 6:15 and Saturday at 1, 2:30 and 6:30 p.m. followed by the Jet Dragster.  Comp Eliminator final qualifying is at 1:30 p.m. and Top Dragster and Top Sportsman final qualifying is at 5 p.m. on Saturday.
