Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals

The first Wallys of the 2022 NHRA Camping World Drag Racing Series will be handed out today -– including a specially-designed trophy for the winner of NHRA’s 900th Pro Stock event –- as event champions are decided at the Lucas Oil NHRA Winternationals presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com .

Since 1961, racers have descended on Auto Club Raceway at Pomona as the launch point for their seasons and championship aspirations and this year will be no different as teams plunge into the 22-event schedule.

Former world champ Brittany Force will lead the Top Fuel troops inti battle after taking the No. 1 qualifying spot on her final pass Saturday and will hope to turn that into a Winternationals win, which would be her first. She’ll face stiff competition from Friday low qualified Justin Ashley, No. 3 qualifier Mike Salinas, and, of course, four-time and reigning world champ Steve Torrence.

Like Force, Pro Stock low qualifier Erica Enders also has never won the Winternationals but she’s eager to get a win under her belts as she tries to strip the championship from longtime rival Greg Anderson. They’ll both be in the hunt for a custom trophy topped with a symbolic Hurst shifter symbolic of the class’ manually-shifted early days.

Anderson, who won the Auto Club NHRA Finals in mid-November in Pomona, will be looking for the winner’s circle again, and it would be a milestone 100th win for the five-time world champ.

Ron Capps, like Force, also took over the No 1 spot in Funny Car on his final qualifying pass, and the newly-minted team owner would love to add an event win to his low qualifier bonus. He’ll take on the sport’s biggest winner, John Force, in round one and then face a gauntlet of tough foes including three-time world champs Matt Hagan and Robert Hight as he fights his way towards raceday glory.

You can catch the action all weekend on FOX Sports 1 and NHRA.tv.
