The parity that currently exists in the Funny Car class was on display in the second round in Topeka where each of the four winners ran within three-hundredth of one another. Robert Hight was quickest with a 3.921 in his win over reigning Mello Yello champ J.R. Todd. After deep-staging, John Force ran just 3.951, but that was enough to beat Bob Tasca III.

Schumacher Racing drivers Jack Beckman and  Tommy Johnson Jr. also advanced. Beckman topped Tim Wilkerson in an extremely close 3.940 to 3.956 race while Johnson beat teammate Ron Capps in a round where both drivers ran matching 3.941 elapsed times.
