Steve Torrence

Steve Torrence put together one of the greatest seasons in NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series history. He won 11 races, including six-straight in the NHRA Countdown to the Championship, and captured his first Top Fuel world championship. His undefeated NHRA Countdown performance was unprecedented and is an achievement that can only be tied, never topped. Torrence has been nominated as a Best Driver at the 2019 ESPY Awards and you can vote Torrence to yet another victory here.

VOTE FOR STEVE TORRENCE

Torrence has lost little ground in the 2019 season. He has already captured five victories, all of them coming consecutively between the NGK Spark Plugs NHRA Four-Wide Nationals and the Menards NHRA Heartland Nationals in Topeka. He strung together 22-straight round wins, nearly matching his 24-round-win streak from the 2018 campaign. He leads the Top Fuel standings by more than 300 points, an incredible number at the halfway mark of the season.

“I am honored to represent the NHRA and drag racing as a Best Driver ESPY nominee,” Torrence said, “Especially since I’m in such select company with Formula 1, Indy Car and NASCAR drivers. It’s just a testament to the dedication and hard work of the Capco boys who put a great car under me every week.”

Torrence is the operations manager at Capco Contractors, the family business that banners the side of his Top Fuel dragster that has made life a nightmare for the category for several years. He races alongside his father, Billy Torrence, at many races. The cancer survivor finished second in Top Fuel in 2017 before storming to a dominant title in 2018.

The ESPYS will air on ABC at 6 p.m. Pacific Time with host Tracy Morgan taking the stage.
