Steve Torrence continued his dominant stretch of performance with a 3.757-second run. The defending world champion earned three bonus points for the best run in the first Top Fuel qualifying session at the Route 66 NHRA Nationals. Doug Kalitta and Mile Salinas rounded out the top three with runs of 3.764 and 3.769 runs at Route 66 Raceway in Joliet.

Austin Prock tied Salinas on elapsed time but was a tenth behind the San Jose, Calif. native on speed. That still put the rookie in a favorable position just two races following a crew chief swap that put Mike Green in charge of the Montana Brand / Rocky Mountain Twist dragster. Prock’s friend and Auto Club Road to the Future rival, Jordan Vandergriff, sits on the bump spot with a 4.203 pass.
