A special “Drag and Drive” eight-car exhibition is set to take place when the NHRA Mission Foods Drag Racing Series returns to Route 66 Raceway in Chicago for the 24th annual Gerber Collision and Glass Route 66 NHRA Nationals presented by PEAK Performance on May 17-19.
Featuring standout names Alex Taylor, Tom Bailey and a ‘Mob of Sick Drag & Drivers,’ this exhibition offers an all-star cast of drivers ready to put on a show in Chicago.
These eye-catching street cars run in the 6-second range and quicker at speeds of more than 200 mph, offering a thrilling spectacle for every race fan. This exhibition will showcase some of the quickest street cars in the world, entertaining fans with runs throughout the weekend and crowing a winner during eliminations on Sunday. Here's a look at some of the participants in Chicago:
ALEX TAYLOR
One of drag-and-drive’s most well known faces, Alex Taylor followed her father Dennis Taylor’s footsteps into the sport, originally racing a ’68 Camaro known as BADMARO. In 2013 she became the youngest Hot Rod Drag Week competitor in history, at just 16 years old.
While BADMARO was a fine eight-second machine, Alex knew she wanted quicker times, and so began her ‘Quest For The Sixes’ by building a full chassis ’55 Chevy 210. With this car, Alex won her first overall title in a drag-and-drive event at Race Week 2.0 in 2021. In 2022 she accomplished her goals of a six-second time and a 200mph pass.
Alongside her racing, Alex has become one of the biggest influencers in the sport of drag racing, and also recently became a co-host of the MotorTrend show Hot Rod Garage.
TOM BAILEY
Tom Bailey needs no introduction as the owner of Sick Seconds 2.0, the quickest street car in the world. The five-times Unlimited Hot Rod Drag Week winner’s ’69 Camaro has been as quick as 5.77 seconds and it is the only machine to have run a five-second pass in drag-and-drive competition.
Tom has expanded beyond just being a driver though, taking an active role in the promotion of drag-and-drive with the creation of Sick The Mag, a print book dedicated to cars that perform just as well on the track as they do cruising on the street. He also ran the first Sick Week last year in Florida, called the ‘Super Bowl of Drag-and-Drive.’
