Team Mopar Notes & Quotes Friday, July 17
TOP FUEL
Mike Dunn
(Mopar Top Fueler), No. 8 qualifier, 4.941, 289.76:
"Another solid day of qualifying for the Mopar dragster. We came out on the first pass and qualify in the #2 position on a conservative, yet solid run. The car had plenty of power and I had a real good grip on the brake for most of the run. Our second hit should have been a lot better. We had too much power for the amount of track that was out there. We had the same numbers as Cory (McClenathan) just before the half-track, but the car began to over-power the track. As a driver, you make a decision if you want to yank on the brake to save the run, but you if you do, you lose so much time. That is why we went form a 4.86 to a 4.94."
PRO STOCK
Scott Geoffrion
(Mopar Avenger), No. 11 qualifier, 7.439/184.23:
"Two consistent runs for the Mopar Pro Stock Dodge Avenger today. We went out on our first run and had too much clutch. We just spun the heck out of the tires in the low gears, but made up for it on the back-half of the run. Dale (Eicke) and Craig (Hankinson) came back and made some great changes for the night session and the car ran terrific. I was a little short in the low gears and we lost some tire speed, otherwise I think we had a car to qualify in the top-half of the field. The conditions were as difficult to tune for as I can to remember in a long, long time. The weather looks to be real hot tomorrow so it was crucial to get into the field today. We'll see how it goes tomorrow."
Darrell Alderman
(Mopar Avenger), No. 16 qualifier, 7.444, 184.01:
"We made it through a Friday night session qualifying in the top sixteen and that is great news for our team. We came out in the afternoon session and laid down a good number early, but fell off on the back-half of the track. We fought tire spin early and never could get the power to the ground. My last pass was much more consistent, but I know that we have more left. We needed to get into the field today because the weather looks to be worse tomorrow. I'm just thrilled that we have two Mopars in the field heading into Saturday."
Larry Nance
(Mopar Avenger), No. 19 qualifier, 7.461, 183.63:
"Not the best of days for the driver. We had problems in the burnout and heated up the clutch. My burnout didn't even get the stickers off the tires. We came back in the night session and made a good solid run. I missed two shift points and that was probably the difference in not making the field . We changed some timing and left at a little higher RPM, which made a big difference. Tonight was probably the session to make a move with the temperature getting into the 100-degree range tomorrow."
Allen Johnson
(Mopar Avenger), No. 28 qualifier, 7.684/184.04:
"We're just a little snake-bitten right now. We spun the tires down low on our first run and that was where we lost most of our time. We needed to make a move during the night session and for whatever reason I just went brain-dead. I saw Scott (Geoffrion) stage and before I knew it, the clutch was grabbing and I just rolled the light. The Mopar/Amoco Dodge Avenger really felt great all day and it's disappointing that we didn't put it together during the late session."
