Bazemore is hoping for more in Virginia

Whit Bazemore got to experience firsthand the power of points leader Cruz Pedregon when he fell to the mean green machine in the second round of the Fram Nationals. Heading into the Pennzoil Nationals in Virginia, where last year Bazemore also lost to Pedregon, in round one. Bazemore, who is currently tied for 10th in the NHRA Winston Funny Car standings. some 217 markers behind Pedregon, thinks his team has made some progress on their struggles, though he knows there's a battle ahead.

"We protected our position in the top 10 in points, and that is very positive," he said of his return to his Georgia stomping grounds. "We're struggling with our car, but believe it or not, we still made some progress at Atlanta. The competition out here is so tough that you literally have to be perfect. We were a little under-clutched in the second round, and we lost to the points leader and race winner.

"So I feel Team Winston did an outstanding job overcoming some obstacles, and we're still in a very positive frame of mind. We're still capable of winning some races this year. Richmond is going to be more of the same. It's a difficult, tricky track. We didn't smoke the tires down the track during eliminations at Atlanta, so we feel pretty confident going into Richmond."
