Bernstein, Force lead PRO National Warmup field

12/19/2000

Add Kenny Bernstein and his Budweiser King to the list of NHRA title contenders scheduled for pre-season testing at the PRO National Warmup Jan. 19 - 21 at Southwestern International Raceway in Tucson, Ariz.

The "King of Speed" is preparing for 2001 with special intensity, having announced a two-year plan to retire from driving the Bud King dragster after the 2002 season.

Bernstein added a note to his retirement plan, stating that he might hang up his helmet after the 2001 season if he wins the NHRA Winston Championship this year.

Two of the leading threats to the NHRA Winston Top Fuel title, held by Gary Scelzi, are also planning their "spring training" in Tucson. Mike Dunn, who led most of the 1999 campaign before slipping to third behind Tony Schumacher and Scelzi, rebounded dramatically in a short three-race stint in the New York Yankees dragster of Gwynn/Steinbrenner racing at the close of 2000. Joe Amato's team dragster will also be in Tucson with a new driver yet to be announced.

The SIR pit area will be crowded with Funny Car teams including 10-time NHRA Winston champion John Force. Force and teammate Tony Pedregon, who will test their 2001 Castrol Mustangs on a track that yielded surprising 4.80-second and 310-mph performances a year ago. Among those seeking to match Force's pace will be the two-car Checker-Schuck's Kragen team of Del Worsham and Frank Pedregon and the new Mopar Dodge of Dean Skuza.

New driving partners Chuck Etchells and Jim Epler will be in Tucson with the Kendall/Matco Tools Camaro and the new Racing Champions/Ertl Camaro. The event will mark Etchells' return to the NHRA title hunt for the first time since hiring Whit Bazemore as team driver for Etchells Racing two years ago. Bazemore left the Etchells stable to drive the Matco Tools Pontiac for Don Schumacher in 2001.

All NHRA Winston and Federal Mogul teams are invited to the PRO National Warmup. Testing is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m each day. SIR has expanded its grandstand seating following last year's standing-room-only crowd. For more information, contact PRO, (317) 280-1320, or Southwestern International Raceway, (520) 762-9700.
