Andrew Cowin awarded Australian Sports Medal

12/06/2000

"To know that what myself and my team have tried to achieve by racing against the world's best in the U.S. has been recognized is extremely special. I am deeply honored to receive the award."
-- Andrew Cowin

Andrew Cowin, the 21-year-old Australian Top Fuel sensation is stunned, honored and proud to have been awarded the Australian Sports Medal by the Governor-General of Australia, Sir William Deane, and the Prime Minister John Howard.

The Australian Sports Medal was instituted in 2000 to commemorate Australian sporting achievement, recognizing the contributions of both current and former sporting participants and for those who have provided services to sport.

Cowin competes on the NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series in his family's K&N Filters/Auto Meter Top Fuel dragster in the United States. Only two other current Australian drag racers, Top Fuel racer Jim Read and Top Doorslammer driver Victor Bray, received the award.

"This year has been so special for Australia with the Sydney Olympic Games being broadcast around the globe, showing our beautiful country to the rest of the world," Cowin said on receiving the award.

"To not be at home and in the U.S. racing while the Olympic Games was on was hard, but to know that what myself and my team have tried to achieve by racing against the world's best in the U.S. has been recognized is extremely special. I am deeply honored to receive the award."

The Australian Sports Medal caps a great year for Cowin and the Cowin Family Racing team, the team recording their fastest ever speeds while also moving to a career-high 16th in the professional NHRA points standings.

Cowin was also named Australian Drag Racer of the Year at the Australian MotorSport Awards in March, along with also being nominated as a finalist in the Young Achiever, International Achiever, and MotorSport Person of the Year awards.
