Force, Schumacher, Bernstein first entrants for Phoenix testing event
12/03/2000
Firebird International Raceway in Chandler, Ariz., will host its annual National Time Trials event Jan. 13-15. The event offers fans their first chance to see all the new cars, new teams, and new paint schemes.
Track management has extended the launch pad of the sport's fastest quarter-mile (where Tony Schumacher set the national speed record at 330 mph in February 1999) to half-track, which should produce great elapsed times. Early entries include 10-time NHRA Winston Funny car champ John Force and former NHRA Winston Top Fuel champs Tony Schumacher and Kenny Bernstein.
Entry is free to all Pros and their crews. Teams can park on the property as early as Jan. 10, and there is a possibility of continued testing through Jan. 18. There also will be a Test 'n' Tune for all other classes as well as E.T. bracket racing.
Additionally, the track will be hosting the Pacific Division Federal-Mogul Series opener, the first race of NHRA's 50th Anniversary 2001 season, Jan. 25-28, one week before the AutoZone Winternationals at Pomona Raceway.
The Firebird Int'l Raceway Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event, which traditionally was held the weekend before the Automobile Club of Southern California Finals in November, was moved to give the racers a chance to earn more grade points toward the AutoZone Winternationals and to give the competitors an opportunity to dial in their entries before the NHRA national event opener in Pomona.
The change also moves the Federal-Mogul Series event away from a NASCAR Winston Cup race and local pro, college, and high school football games, giving the track the opportunity to draw more motorsports fans and media.
"We are looking forward to having the NHRA and Federal-Mogul season opener event at Firebird Int'l Raceway in January," said Pacific Division Director Brian Stickel. "This event in January should provide the nice and cool weather that will give the fans record breaking side-by-side racing."
Teams may begin parking on the property Wednesday, Jan. 24, followed by a Test 'n' Tune Jan. 25, qualifying Jan. 26-27, and final eliminations Jan. 28.
