The sheer power and rich history of NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing will be on display as NHRA will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Auto Club NHRA Finals, the season-ending race of the 2014 season, Nov. 13-16 at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. Since 1965, the event has launched names into the record books as drivers have celebrated their life-changing championship titles during the final weekend of the season.
Tickets for the legendary event go on sale today and can be purchased by calling the NHRA Ticket Sales Center at (800) 884-NHRA (6472), or online at www.NHRATIX.com.
The final event in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series for 2014 is also the final event in the NHRA Mello Yello Countdown to the Championship, the six-race playoffs that determine category champions.
The tradition-rich season-ending event at Auto Club Raceway at Pomona has seen numerous memorable moments throughout NHRA history. It’s where Top Fuel pilot Antron Brown became the first African-American driver to win a major U.S. motorsports championship in 2012 and where Tony Schumacher completed “The Run,” dramatically taking the 2006 Top Fuel title from Doug Kalitta in the race’s closing moments with a national record performance and race victory.
Shawn Langdon (Top Fuel); Matt Hagan (Funny Car); Rickie Jones (Pro Stock); and Eddie Krawiec (Pro Stock Motorcycle) were last year’s winners of the event that will once again be televised on ESPN2.
This year’s edition of the famed event will feature intense side-by-side racing as drivers in Top Fuel, Funny Car, Pro Stock and Pro Stock Motorcycle battle one last time for their chance at winning the season-ending event. Perhaps more importantly, drivers will compete to earn a permanent spot in NHRA history as a Mello Yello Series world champion.
Several special celebrations are planned for this significant milestone event. There will be several NHRA-exclusive Cacklefests throughout the weekend, and special main events featuring and honoring the legends of the sport on Friday and Saturday. There will be special autograph sessions and Q&A sessions with many of the sport’s legends. The SealMaster Track Walk, where fans can walk on famed Auto Club Raceway at Pomona prior to Sunday’s final eliminations, will also feature several of the sports legends.
Drivers in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series will also look to wrap up successful seasons at the Auto Club NHRA Finals.
Two Mello Yello Series qualifying sessions are scheduled for 11:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14. The final two qualifying sessions will take place on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 11:45 a.m. and 2:45 p.m. Final eliminations begin at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 16.
