Mike Dunn's Sonoma Power Rankings
Wednesday, July 23, 2014

J.R. Todd, Robert Hight, Allen Johnson, and Andrew Hines are the top picks in ESPN2 analyst Mike Dunn's Power Rankings heading into the NHRA Sonoma Nationals.

"With a great race in Denver to kick off the Western Swing, I put all of the winners No. 1 in the rankings," said Dunn. "Even though there is next to nothing teams can relate to when it comes to their tune-ups, most teams that win in Denver do well at the other Swing races, and even when they don't get the trophy, they usually go rounds. So here we go!"

Rank Driver Plus/minus
1. J.R. Todd NR
2. Antron Brown -1
3. Brittany Force NR
Mike's notes: Todd won in Denver, but it could be both Team Kalitta cars at the top, so Doug Kalitta absolutely will be one to watch. Also, keep an eye on Al-Anabi Racing. I know they have been struggling of late, but now is a good time to start getting everything ready for Indy and the Countdown to the Championship, and Alan Johnson has done well here in the past.
Rank Driver Plus/minus
1. Robert Hight NR
2. Ron Capps NR
3. John Force -1
Mike's notes: I like these three picks. They are all very strong right now, and Force and Capps have very good records here. The one to watch will be Tim Wilkerson. Even though he has not won in a while, he always seems to go rounds during the Swing.
Rank Driver Plus/minus
1. Allen Johnson Even
2. Jason Line NR
3. Dave Connolly NR
Mike's notes: Line ran really well in Denver, and I know you can't really count that in Sonoma, but he also had a very good car in Chicago, and even though he has been hit or miss, his car has been getting better when you look at his entire season. Connolly has a decent car but makes up a lot with his driving so he gets the final spot.
Rank Driver Plus/minus
1. Andrew Hines Even
2. Hector Arana Jr. Even
3. Michael Ray NR
Mike's notes: Like Top Fuel, the Harley-Davidson team could both be on top so watch Eddie Krawiec. The other one to watch is Steve Johnson. He has been to two straight semifinals.
