There was a collective sigh of relief throughout Greg Stanfield’s engine-building shop Thursday when Kenny Koretsky and JD Coffman officially announced plans to continue supporting Stanfield in his bid for the 2012 NHRA Full Throttle Pro Stock championship.
Koretsky’s Nitro Fish Gear and Coffman’s Coffman Tank Trucks also were the primary backers of the Bossier City, La., driver last season.
“I get to go racing one more year,” said an elated Stanfield, “and I am excited because our race team is still together. We have been working overtime at the shop so we will be ready to go testing in Las Vegas before the [season-opening O’Reilly Auto Parts NHRA] Winternationals at Pomona [Feb. 9-12].
“We’ll be starting the season with our old Nitro Fish/Coffman Tank Trucks GXP,” he continued, “but we will be switching to a new Camaro after a few races. We are really looking forward to getting the Camaro, but our GXP ran well at Pomona last year.”
Stanfield was a finalist at both 2011 races at venerable Auto Club Raceway at Pomona. He turned back all challengers at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals in November to end the season on a winning note. He began the year with a runner-up at last year’s Winternationals and finished seventh in series points. His best performance was in 2010 when he was second to Greg Anderson.
“Greg has a good team. They know how to race,” commented Koretsky. “I’m looking forward to the season. I hope we have a good one. I am also happy because crew chief, Eddie Guarnaccia, decided to stay with Greg and the team.”
This will be Stanfield’s 11th Pro Stock season and his third with Koretsky.
“We are pleased to have Kenny and Nitro Fish onboard this season,” said Coffman. “We also have added support from Lucas Oil and Wix Filters. We are looking forward to getting back to the track. We hope to start where we left off -- with a win.”
