BRAINERD, Minn. – Cedar Falls Raceway dominated the Team Championship collecting 61 points to take home the Champions trophy at this weekend’s NHRA West Central Division Summit Racing Series Finals at Brainerd International Raceway. Cedar Fall’s finished 14 points ahead of sister track Eddyville Raceway and 21 points in front of Rock Falls Raceway who took third in the team standings.
Darrel Goheen picked up where he left off last year, and the year before that, taking his third straight Summit Racing Series West Central Division Championship in the Sportsman class. The Hays, Kansas, racer running for SRCA Dragstrip wheeled his ’67 Chevelle to the win over Scott Heintzman, Fargo, N.D. Goheen posted a 7.654 second pass at 87.84 mph to Heintzman’s 8.188, 85.63. Goheen and the other winners from this weekend will advance to the NHRA Summit Racing Series National Championship in Pomona, Calif., at Auto Club Raceway in November.
A pair of Minnesota racers will join Goheen in California as Gary Koch, Clearwater, Minn., raced to the win over Carl Anderson, Ottamwa, Iowa, in the Super Pro class and Brandon Schmall, Lino Lakes, Minn., took the win over Jim Noben, Holmen, Wis., in the Pro class. Koch went 6.922 seconds at 100.25 mph in his ’65 Oldsmobile in bettering Anderson’s ’95 dragster while Schmall covered the track in 6.292 seconds on his 6.91 dial-in to beat Noben’s ’68 Camaro.
The Super Pro Bike and the High School categories each saw a pair of Iowa racers advance to the finals with David Primrose, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, beating Kurt Clark, Davenport, Iowa, in the two-wheel class at 5.702 seconds, 120.17 mph on his Kawasaki. Knoxville, Iowa, racer Megan DeMoss took home the High School trophy in 9.962 seconds ousting Brain Hurley, Waterloo, Iowa, and his ’78 Nova.

Early rounds of eliminations, originally scheduled for Sunday morning, began today along with early rounds in the events Race of Champions that was scheduled to be completed today. With the changes, both the Race of Champions, and the West Central Division Summit Series Championship final eliminations will take place on Sunday.
Upwards of 500 racers in Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman and Super Pro Bike made the trip to Brainerd in hopes of taking home trophies and bragging rights along with a share of the event’s purse and contingency postings. The division champions will advance to the NHRA Summit Racing Series National Championship in Pomona, Calif., at Auto Club Raceway in November to battle the champions from the other six NHRA divisions for the right to be called the NHRA Summit Racing Series National Champion!

Gates open at 8 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday with Saturday’s time trials beginning at 9 a.m. and round 1 of the Race of Champions scheduled for 1 p.m. The ROC pits the top points earners from each track in head to head single elimination competition with winner’s being crowned Saturday evening.
Sunday’s action gets underway at 8 a.m. with round 1 for the West Central Division Summit Series Championship with Kansas City Int’l Raceway looking to defend their title from a year ago. Sunday’s winners in Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, and Pro Bike will advance to the Summit National Championship at Auto Club Raceway, Pomona, Calif., in November where they will battle the Division Champions from the six other NHRA divisions for a purse of over $100,000.

The event winners in Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman and Pro Bike will advance to compete against winners from NHRA’s other six divisions at the NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif., in November. They will each receive $3,500 for competing in the Finals and the winner in each class will receive an additional $5,000.

Racing kicked off today at Brainerd International Raceway for the NHRA West Central Division Summit Racing Series Finals. More than 500 racers from 21 tracks across the region took to the quarter mile today for opening day of time trials. Up for grabs this weekend are both Individual and Team Championships with more than $50,000 in purse and contingency postings.
Extremely cool temperatures delayed the start of racing today for the NHRA West Central Division Summit Racing Series Finals at Brainerd international Raceway, and with Mother Nature not looking like she will cooperate tomorrow, officials have made some adjustments to the event’s schedule.
