Jaggers’s win at NHRA Summit Finals helps Team Firebird take home the championship

Monday
WOODBURN, Ore. (Sept. 7, 2009) – It was a day later than scheduled but the squad from Firebird Raceway in Boise, Idaho, took home the team championship from the NHRA Northwest Division Summit Racing Series Finals at Woodburn Dragstrip.  Teams of racers representing tracks across the division converged on Woodburn Dragstrip in a quest for individual and team honors.

The team from Woodburn had three racers in the final rounds, and two of them were facing off against each other.  Firebird’s team had two racers in the final rounds and came away with one win.  Ultimately, the group from Boise scored 70 points to Woodburn’s 66.

 Middleton, Idaho’s Chris Jaggers helped lead his team to victory, scoring the win in Super Pro.  Jaggers beat out Shawn Herbst of Selah, Wash., who was running for Renegade Raceway.

The Sportsman winner was Adam DePeel, Clackamas, Ore., racing for Woodburn.  DePeel wheeled his ‘78 Camaro to the win over Ken Green, Happy Valley, Wash., representing Portland Int’l Raceway in his ’67 Chevelle. 

The Motorcylce/Snowmobile final pitted two Woodburn racers against each other.  In the end, Portland, Ore.’s Mark Adams rode his ’01 Kawasaki to the win over Roger Wolff, Dundee, Ore.  Wolff, aboard his ’06 Kawasaki, was also the runner-up in Saturday’s Race of Champions competition.

Ken Windley, Caldwell, Idaho, from team Firebird, fell to Robby Hornby, Spokane Valley, Wash., who was racing for Spokane County Raceway in the Pro final. 

The win in the Sport Compact final went to Gerald Patzer, Abbotsford, B.C., running for Eagle Motorplex.  He jettisoned Sheila Lawrence of Port Orchard, Wash.  She was racing from the team from Bremerton Raceway.

The group from Bremerton Raceway garnered the coveted Team Spirit Award with their Killer Bee theme.

WOODBURN, Ore. (Sept. 6, 2009) – After getting hit by rain five times today, NHRA and Woodburn Dragstrip officials pulled the plug on the NHRA Northwest Division Summit Racing Series Finals for the day. Eliminations will resume Monday morning at 8 a.m. 

There were more than 600 cars in competition and they had gotten through first round of all categories and were almost through the second round of Super Pro when the last rain shower hit.  However, according to Division Director Jonathan Adams, the radar indicates this one will last well into the night.

Racers in the NHRA Northwest Division Summit Racing Series Finals are vying for team and individual honors and a share of the purse worth more than $16,000.

The division’s Jr. Dragster category ran eliminations on Saturday.  In the Jr. Thunder (8- to 12-year-old) class, Meghan Molinari of Battle Ground, Wash., (Portland Int’l Raceway) scored the win over Woodburn Dragstrip’s Jerold Mix, Aumsville, Ore.  In Jr. Lightning (13- to 17-year-old), Puyallup resident Taren Smith (Bremerton Raceway) ousted Greyson Wolfe of Spokane, Wash., (Spokane County Raceway).

Track managers had an opportunity to help their teams on Saturday, participating in the Track Manager’s Challenge.  After the Challenge, the preliminary point standings have Portland Int’l Raceway in first place with 36 points and Spokane County Raceway, Woodburn Dragstrip, Firebird Raceway and Madras Dragstrip all within 10 points.

WOODBURN, Ore. (Sept. 5, 2009) –  Racing continued today at Woodburn Dragstrip where the best bracket racers in NHRA’s Northwest division have converged to compete for individual and team honors at the NHRA Northwest Division Summit Racing Series Finals.  Teams representing tracks from across the region are racing in eight categories: Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, Motorcycle/Snowmobile, High School, Sport Compact and two categories of Jr. Dragster. 

Today’s action was highlighted by the Race of Champions (ROC), a race within the race, where the top points earning drivers from each track square off in head-to-head competition.  The ROC winners in Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman and Motorcycle/Snowmobile earn the right to compete for a national championship and a winner-take-all $5,000 purse against the winners from NHRA’s other six divisions during the NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif., in November.

David Regnier of Bend, Ore., (Madras Dragstrip) wheeled his ’66 Nova to the ROC win over Lloyd York, Kent, Wash., (Pacific Raceways) who was behind the wheel of his ’68 Nova.  Spokane, Wash., racer Dave Oien (Spokane County Raceway) won the ROC in Pro in his ’66 Cornet.  He ousted fellow Spokane resident Eric Wolfe (Spokane County Raceway) ,in a ’67 Fairlane, in the final.  The win in the Sportsman ROC went to Martin Jackman, Mission, B.C. (Eagle Motorplex) in his ’66 Chevy II.  Jackman scored the win when Ted Buzynis, Ft. MacLeod, Alb., (MHDRA Dragstrip) was unable to make the call in the final round.  Ken Bromley, Yacolt, Wash., (Portland Int’l Raceway) rode his ’06 Honda to the ROC win in Motorcycle/Snowmobile.  He beat out Roger Wolff, Dundee, Ore., (Woodburn Dragstrip) aboard his ’06 Kawasaki.  High School category racer Josh Wilson, Vancouver, Wash., (Woodburn Dragstrip), grabbed the ROC win over Jesse Neveu, Yakima, Wash., (Renegade Raceways).

Eliminations for the Northwest Division Summit Racing Series Finals start Sunday morning at 8 a.m.  More than 600 racers started the event and in the end there will only be eight left standing.

(Sept. 4, 2009) – The best bracket racers from across NHRA’s Northwest division have come together this weekend at Woodburn Dragstrip for the division’s Summit Racing Series Finals.  Top points earning drivers in four categories, Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman and Motorcycle/Snowmobile, from across the region are vying for individual and team honors and a share of the cash purse worth more than $16,000.  Racers in the High School category, Sport Compact and two classes of Jr. Dragsters will also run in the event.

Tomorrow’s action will feature more time trials as well as the division’s Race of Champions, slated to start at 1 p.m.  The Race of Champions is a race within a race that pits the winningest drivers from each track in head-to-head competition.  Winners of the Race of Champions in Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman and Motorcycle/Snowmobile will have the right to compete for a national championship against the winners from NHRA’s other six divisions during the NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif.  They will run for a winner-take-all $5,000 purse.

Some racers participated in a Gambler’s Race, which does not have any bearing on the points for the regular event.  Boise, Idaho’s Cody Hiatt scored the win in the Electronics class beating out Dale Green of Kent, Wash.  In the No Electronics class, Corey Ferguson, Langley, B.C., ousted Courtney Alley of Eagle, Idaho, in the final.

WOODBURN, Ore. – The best drag racers from tracks across NHRA’s Northwest Division will be at Woodburn Dragstrip to square off in head-to-head competition at the NHRA Summit Racing Series Northwest Division Finals, Sept. 4-6. Top points-earning drivers in seven classes will be competing for team and individual honors. Racers in Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman, Motorcycle/Snowmobile, Sport Compact, High School, and two categories of Jr. Dragster will run in the event.

Gates will open at 8 a.m. each day. Time trials will start Friday morning at 9 and continue Saturday at 8:30 a.m. Eliminations will start Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
