11th Annual NHRA California Hot Rod Reunion starts off with a bang
BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. - Nitro in the air. Historic dragsters firing it up in the hotel parking lot. A big day at Famoso Raceway. Hundreds of die-hard drag racing fans and hot rod enthusiasts squeezing into an awards ceremony. Yes, it was party time in Bakersfield as the NHRA Motorsports Museum kicked off its 11th California Hot Rod Reunion in style - vintage drag racing style.
"We had our largest Friday attendance ever at the track," said Steve Gibbs, vice president, director NHRA Motorsports Museum. "This will be the largest event we've had here in terms of attendance and vehicles."
Gibbs was on the mark as the large gathering of fans packed the legendary track the first day to watch vintage drags, see cool street rods and hot rods and buy as many collectibles as they could carry.
Then it was off to the DoubleTree Hotel for a sentimental journey back to the roots of drag racing as several heroes of the past honored. The list of honorees included Grand Marshal Marv Rifchin, Don and Bob Spar, Bobby Tapia, Don Vesco, the Surfers Tom Jobe and Roberto Skinner and Doug Thorley. SO-CAL Speed Shop's Alex Xydias and Pete Chapouris were the Justice Brothers Spotlight Award recipients.
