BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Between the car shows, the swap meets, and the hot dog stands at Famoso Raceway, the serious business of racing got underway at the NHRA's Automobile Club of Southern California Hot Rod Reunion. With the headline front-engine Top Fuel Dragsters not receiving their qualifying runs until Saturday, cars from drag racing's yesterdays took their turn in the spotlight.

Not that the racing was slow.

Hawthorne, Calif.'s Larry Pettit led the parade of A/Fuel Dragsters with a 6.77-second run at 200.66 mph, with two more drivers, Jim Paul of Forest Hill, Calif., and Pleasanton, Calif.'s Jason Richey joining Pettit in the sixes with runs of 6.88- and 6.97-seconds, respectively.

Don Enriquez of Mission Viejo, Calif., leads a field of 23 Jr. Fuel Dragsters with a 7.43-second run, quick enough to maintain a tenth-of-a-second advantage over second-placed Mike Chrisman, who recorded a 7.48-second pass.

Time trials in all categories resumes Saturday at 11:00 a.m., with Top Fuel Dragster scheduled to receive two qualifying attempts, at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m.
