FEDERAL-MOGUL FUNNY CAR

Saturday's 1st Round

Kent, WA - RIS - Results of round 1 eliminations in Federal-Mogul Funny Car at the 10th Annual NHRA Northwest Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Roger Bateman 0.476 6.035 232.37
 (L) Mitch Myers 0.334(R) 6.102 229.29

We start with our traditional number 8 and 9
qualifiers. Both drivers are Division Six regulars, and
know this track quite well. Bateman is from Calgary
Alberta, and Myers hails from Hermiston Oregon.

Myers redlights, and Bateman pedals it and smokes the
tires a bit at the top end.

 (W) Brian Hough 0.484 5.955 239.61
 (L) Sam Blue 0.489 6.128 235.97

Brian has run well, then had trouble during a good portion
of the season, but he gets back to his winning ways. Margin
 of victory is 61 feet.

 (W) Steve Sommer 0.481 5.907 241.41
 (L) Jason Rupert 0.490 6.245 227.61

If Jason gets past Sommer perhaps we should call him
David the rest of the event. That run will give Sommer
lane choice against Brian Hough next round.

 (W) Bernie Harrington 0.532 6.415 211.26
 (L) John Weaver 0.460 11.274 70.43

A pair of Division Seven racers to battle it out here.
Harrington pedals it to the next round, moving all over
the track.

Couldn't see why Weaver had trouble.

 (W) Larry Miner 0.525 5.885 244.03
 (L) Forrest Le Blanc 0.528 6.066 233.64

Evidently Harrington or Weaver drop oil on the
track, so we are down for a cleanup. It's the right lane,
so Weaver was the culprit.

After a brief jet dryer activity, we are ready to resume.
Le Blanc has a basic 6.1x setup, so Miner SHOULD be ready
to move to round two.

 (W) Dan McGlone 0.495 6.051 234.86
 (L) Pat Austin 0.538 6.018 239.17

Winner here will run Harrington next round. McGlone
takes out Goliath with a big hole shot to win by three
feet. Wow.

 (W) Bucky Austin 0.519 5.819 243.17
 (L) Mike Giuliani 0.508 5.992 237.59

The winner will face Roger Bateman next round, and a
6.05 is the magic lane choice number.

 (W) Russ Parker 0.707 5.901 235.04
 (L) Craig Peterson 0.556 7.933 121.75

Russ Parker is sponsored by The Dairy Farmers of
Oregon organization. His brother Randy drove last year,
and won this event several years ago.

Nice pass for Parker, but he loses lane choice against
Larry Miner next round.

   (R) = Red light foul

FEDERAL-MOGUL FUNNY CAR

Sunday's 2nd Round

Kent, WA - RIS - Results of round 2 eliminations in Federal-Mogul Funny Car at the 10th Annual NHRA Northwest Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Brian Hough 0.479 5.969 239.93
 (L) Steve Sommer 0.473 8.050 119.95

Steve Sommer goes past half track on the burnout,
which is pretty unusual for him. Both teams are major
players in Division Six, and have raced each other several
times. The Hough Racing Team is tough, they have the
equipment and talent to beat you.

Sommer goes 1500 feet plus, and gets so close to the
centerline Larry and I thought he took out the cones.
The replay shows he missed them, but all the Rollin and
Shakin cost him any chance of a win. An upset? Nope. As
I said the Hough team is always tough.

 (W) Bernie Harrington 0.530 6.058 236.15
 (L) Dan McGlone 0.480 6.306 182.81

The talk of the FMFC pits last night was Dan's
holeshot victory over Pat Austin in Round one. McGlone
didn't have his car staged correctly, he makes a very hard
right turn towards the wall, pedals and corrects it, then
kicks the rods out about 1000 foot out. No chutes
appeared, so we have oil all the way through the shutdown
area. Big cleanup this time folks.

Harrington will face Brian Hough in the Semi's with Hough
 having lane choice.

 (W) Larry Miner 0.482 5.799 243.44
 (L) Russ Parker 0.427 6.579 221.34

Larry Minor decides to swap lanes after watching
McGlones oil down. That complete, we are ready to go.
Great light for Parker, but he has a tire shaking 1 second
plus 60 foot time, and watches Larry Miner run his best ET
of the weekend.

Miner will face the winner of the Bucky Austin - vs -
Roger Bateman pair.

 (W) Roger Bateman 0.419 5.922 241.28
 (L) Bucky Austin 0.608 5.766 243.70

Bucky "Mr. Butterbean" Austin has been on a roll with
his Havoline Firebird. He last won this race in 1989.
Roger Bateman hails from Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Roger knew he needed a great light, and he got one in
spades. As an added bonus Bucky is dead late at the tree,
and Bateman puts away the number one qualifier by eleven
feet. Bateman will face Larry Miner in the Semi's with
Minor having lane choice.

FEDERAL-MOGUL FUNNY CAR

Sunday's 3rd Round

Kent, WA - RIS - Results of round 3 eliminations in Federal-Mogul Funny Car at the 10th Annual NHRA Northwest Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Brian Hough 0.535 5.905 240.57
 (L) Bernie Harrington 0.495 6.029 237.15

Bernie used up a lot of extra real estate till
midtrack, then Hough moves ahead to win by 30 feet. See
what I mean about Brian Hough? These guys are alway tough,
and have had their share of bad luck this year, perhaps
a lot of hard work and a little luck are paying off.

 (W) Larry Miner 0.497 5.795 242.78
 (L) Roger Bateman 0.388(R) 5.809 241.22

Bateman gets his best pass of the event, but gets the
ol' Red Eye.... Miner makes a pretty pass down the left
lane, and will face Brian Hough in the Final. Larry will
have lane choice.

   (R) = Red light foul

FEDERAL-MOGUL FUNNY CAR

Sunday's Fth Round

Kent, WA - RIS - Results of final round eliminations in Federal-Mogul Funny Car at the 10th Annual NHRA Northwest Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Brian Hough 0.458 5.947 240.32
 (L) Larry Miner 0.484 6.870 119.47

Larry Miner selects the left lane for his Fontana powered
Avenger. This is the second final round appearance for Brian
Hough, he was a runner-up at the 96 Autolites.

Larry Minor bangs the blower, launching the body at least 50
feet in the air, higher than I've ever seen in Federal Mogul
Funny Car. The blower is hanging off kilter on the engine, and
the body lands in Brian's lane as Larry comes to a stop.

Brian "Mr. Excitement" Hough goes all the way down the
quarter mile for the win light.

Congrats to Brian Hough, who just won his very first National
Event.
