TOP FUEL DRAGSTER

Sunday's 1st Round

Morrison, CO - RIS - Results of round 1 eliminations in Top Fuel at the 19th annual NHRA Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Gary Scelzi 0.493 4.878 295.08
 (L) Larry Dixon, Jr. 0.499 10.857 79.82

11:00 AM and we're starting right on schedule. Can
Scelzi keep his streak of semifinals or better appearances
alive? Can "the kid" topple him? Yes. No. Dixon was up
in smoke almost immediately, while Scelzi, who struggled a
bit in qualifying, laid down a smooth, clean, easy pass to
advance another round, matching his best qualifying pass in
the process.

 (W) Scott Kalitta 0.504 4.860 296.93
 (L) Shelly Anderson 0.564 5.025 274.64

Scott laid down two good passes yesterday, crew chief
Ed McCulloch smiling in the motel a lot yesterday
evening. Shelly struggled to just break into the fours.
She was a bit late on the light today, but it probably made
no difference because Scott came back with the good tuneup,
while the Western Auto machine struggled a bit on the top
end. The Safety Safari taking a close look near the lights.
 No oil, so we continue.

 (W) Tony Schumacher 0.490 5.098 288.73
 (L) Jim Head 0.470 6.092 156.71

Head was ahead at 330 feet, the wheels in the air.
When they came down, he lost traction and Schumacher pulled
out to a good lead despite a loss of traction on the top
end of the run.

 (W) Mike Dunn 0.466 4.810 288.36
 (L) Bruce Sarver 0.504 5.159 219.19

Dunn streaked away from Sarver starting at about half
track, Sarver losing traction and pedaling twice, then
popping the blower. The Safety Safari made a couple of
quick laps with the sweeper to get the remains out of the
left lane, while Dunn won easily with his best run of the
weekend (by a bunch).

 (W) Cory McClenathan 0.499 4.774 297.52
 (L) Spike Gorr 0.534 6.072 161.05

Big mismatch here, Gorr only able to muster one
complete pass during qualifying. And the race ran true to
form, Cory Mac continuing his hot streak while Gorr
abandoned the run around the 330 marker. Cory Mac will
have lane choice against Scelzi in the second round.

 (W) Doug Herbert 0.527 5.351 199.37
 (L) Joe Amato 0.502 11.767 85.85

And this is a big upset, Amato losing traction
immediately and coasting through. Herbert was there for
the taking, his car springing a leak at half track, but by
then Amato was on cruise control. Amato's streak of "win
or bust" is intact.....Herbert faces Scott Kalitta in round
two, Kalitta with lane choice.

 (W) Bob Vandergriff 0.461 4.899 275.90
 (L) Eddie Hill 0.509 5.026 281.42

11:10 AM and the cleanup starts in the right lane,
Herbert's car leaving a trail of oil from half track all
the way up the hill.
11:22 AM and the next pair fire their engines, the
cleanup complete. Hill ran well during qualifying,
Vandergriff had ony one run in the fours. Well, so much
for prior form - Vandergriff posted an excellent reaction
time and then streaked to the finish line, only a brief
flash of flame at the line to mar the run, while Eddie's
car trailed smoke from the engine bay all the way down the
track. But it was dry smoke - so we continue.
Vandergrff has lane choice against Schumacher next round.

 (W) Cristen Powell 0.504 4.948 268.81
 (L) Kenny Bernstein 0.527 4.934 288.92

11:25 AM and this is the final pair of the round. And
we have another upset (even though she qualfied higher),
putting a holeshot on the usually prompt Bernstein and then
matching him all the way down the track. Both cars ate
some engine parts and showed a flash of fame at the finish,
but Cristen continues to round two to face Mike Dunn (Dunn
with lane choice) while Kenny heads for the trailer.

TOP FUEL DRAGSTER

Sunday's 2nd Round

Morrison, CO - RIS - Results of round 2 eliminations in Top Fuel at the 19th annual NHRA Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Tony Schumacher 0.480 4.845 296.44
 (L) Bob Vandergriff 0.495 4.877 266.90

1:45 PM and this was a close drag race until
Vandergriff's engine let go around the 1,000 foot mark,
flames and pieces of engine flying out of the engine bay.
Even with the fireworks, both drivers produced their best
run of the weekend and the margin was about half a car
length. The Safety Safari had to do a bit of cleanup in
the shutdown area in the right lane, so there was a brief
delay before the next pair.

 (W) Doug Herbert 0.518 5.009 284.62
 (L) Scott Kalitta 0.498 7.737 100.72

It's not about power - Herbert's good luck proving the
key to victory once again as his second opponent in a row
just plain overpowers the track. Schumacher will have lane
choice when they meet in the semifinals.

 (W) Cory McClenathan 0.486 4.738 310.23
 (L) Gary Scelzi 0.482 7.387 115.50

Scelzi's streak comes to an end, having gone to the
semifinals in all eleven races this year, but not here.
Cory Mac making a flawless run, resetting Scott Kalitta's
track speed record in the process. He even pedaled it early
in the run!! Scelzi lost traction around 100 feet.

 (W) Mike Dunn 0.497 4.826 297.32
 (L) Cristen Powell 0.491 5.111 242.32

Dunn's tuneup was just about right once again, while
his opponent fell off her earlier pace (the problem not
evident from here). However, Dunn loses lane choice to
Cory Mac in the semifinals by almost a tenth of a second.

TOP FUEL DRAGSTER

Sunday's 3rd Round

Morrison, CO - RIS - Results of round 3 eliminations in Top Fuel at the 19th annual NHRA Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Tony Schumacher 0.466 4.975 286.89
 (L) Doug Herbert 0.457 5.146 272.14

We have a Colorado car in the fnal round,
Schumacher with a clean pass while Herbert began smoking
the tires at half track, the luck that got him here
deserting him on this run.

 (W) Cory McClenathan 0.503 4.808 293.06
 (L) Mike Dunn 0.503 5.945 157.75

And Cory Mac earns lane choice in the final round with
yet another smoke-free run, Dunn losing traction around the
 330-foot mark.

TOP FUEL DRAGSTER

Sunday's Fth Round

Morrison, CO - RIS - Results of final round eliminations in Top Fuel at the 19th annual NHRA Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Cory McClenathan 0.454 4.864 294.59
 (L) Tony Schumacher 0.452 4.971 287.53

5:31 PM and Cory Mac registers his first win of the
1997 season in fine fashion, debuting a new car with a win
over a tenacious Schumacher. It was a good race, but the
McDonald's dragster steadily pulled out to a solid lead.
Neither car had any obvious problems during the run, and
that was bad news for Schumacher because Cory Mac has
been very strong all weekend, with eight good passes out of the
new McKinney chassis.
Last time he debuted a new car was last year at
Columbus, and he won that one too. Could get
expensive....that's 43 career wins for the McDonald's team
and their sixth double.

FUNNY CAR

Sunday's 1st Round

Morrison, CO - RIS - Results of round 1 eliminations in Funny Car at the 19th annual NHRA Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Dean Skuza 0.475 5.212 300.50
 (L) Kenji Okazaki 0.467 5.605 213.01

11:27 AM and this promised to be a good drag race,
both cars consistent through qualifying, Skuza about a
tenth quicker. And it was a good race, to half track, but
then Okazaki began spinning the tires while Skuza did not
(as you can tell from his speed, the second 300 mph pass by
a Funny car here this weekend). Skuza won easily, Okazaki
calling it off on the top end with Skuza way ahead.

 (W) Mitch McDowell 0.543 5.629 234.68
 (L) Gary Densham 0.531 8.692 98.68

Densham was ahead at 330 feet, but then he began
spinning the tires and backpedaled a couple times.
McDowell was way ahead at half track and then did a job of
driving when his car began spinning the tires, the car
fishtailing violently at the top end, a real hand full.
McDowell lost lane choice to Skuza on that pass.

 (W) Whit Bazemore 0.487 5.304 269.46
 (L) Del Worsham 0.518 8.639 94.08

Worsham appeared to break something at 330 feet,
nosing over sharply, almost like he put the brakes on.
Bazemore was on a strong pass to half track, then began
smokng the tires and then blistered them through the lights.

 (W) Tony Pedregon 0.496 7.278 123.79
 (L) Al Hofmann 0.511 9.053 92.67

From the top end we hear that Worsham broke a
driveshaft.
This was a strange one, Hofmann losing traction almost
immediately and shutting it down. Then Pedregon appeared
to lose the blower belt, the header flames going out and
tons of raw fuel spewing from the pipes. And then they
both just coasted down the strip, Pedregon with more
momentum earned the win light.

 (W) John Force 0.507 5.214 293.73
 (L) Tim Wilkerson 0.504 5.684 217.28

Wilkerson lost traction around the 330-foot marker,
while Force continues his consistent, if unimpressive,
pace. He has been running between 5.21 and 5.24 all
weekend.

 (W) Ron Capps 0.487 5.317 267.69
 (L) Randy Anderson 0.288(R) 7.422 117.50

Anderson was way early and abandoned the run when he
realized he'd redlighted. Capps made a nice, easy, clean
pass to advance, but he gave up lane choice to Force next
round and need another tenth of a second to have a shot at
him.

 (W) Chuck Etchells 0.511 6.570 152.98
 (L) Cruz Pedregon 0.460 7.129 146.77

This was a pedaling contest and both drivers did a job
of driving to get to the finish line - Etchells' car
swerving violently and almost hitting the right hand wall.
His headers hit the track surface, sending up sparks, but
he didn't hit the wall and got the win. And he has lane
choice over Tony Pedregon in round two.

 (W) Tom Hoover 0.524 5.347 277.00
 (L) Mark Oswald 0.511 5.412 238.60

This was a close one, Oswald leading all the way to the
1,000 foot markers, and then he began spinning the tires
while Hoover moved by for the win. But Hoover lost lane
choice to Whit Bazemore next round.
11:51 AM and it's on to Pro Stock.

   (R) = Red light foul

FUNNY CAR

Sunday's 2nd Round

Morrison, CO - RIS - Results of round 2 eliminations in Funny Car at the 19th annual NHRA Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Chuck Etchells 0.512 5.281 297.52
 (L) Tony Pedregon 0.493 5.504 278.89

The difference in this one came on the
top end, Pedregon hazing the tires while Etchells was glued
to the strip.

 (W) Whit Bazemore 0.502 5.168 296.54
 (L) Tom Hoover 0.564 7.115 126.92

This one was all Bazemore, his car stuck to the track
and all eight "candles" blazing. Hoover gave it a shot,
but lost traction shortly after passing the 330-foot marker
and gave it up.

 (W) Dean Skuza 0.483 5.229 296.44
 (L) Mitch McDowell 0.518 6.898 138.48

Skuza also posted a solid run, the car stuck to te
strip, while McDowell lost traction around the 330-foot
mark. He'll face Etchells in the semifinals.

 (W) John Force 0.404 5.377 291.35
 (L) Ron Capps 0.487 7.788 109.58

How lucky is John Force? He thought he lit the red
bulb here, and then at mid track his car made a hard move
to the center line and he had to pedal it to get back in
the groove. Meanwhile, his opponent was fighting tire spin,
losing traction around the 330 foot mark and pedaling a
couple of times before giving it up. Force will not have
lane choice when he meets Bazemore in the semifinals.

FUNNY CAR

Sunday's 3rd Round

Morrison, CO - RIS - Results of round 3 eliminations in Funny Car at the 19th annual NHRA Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Chuck Etchells 0.524 5.438 281.86
 (L) Dean Skuza 0.468 5.943 190.23

Both drivers made match race-style
burnouts, long and smokey. Unfortuately, Skuza's run
looked amost like another burnout, while Etchells did
another masterful job of driving a very loose race car on
the top end of the track to advance to the final round.

 (W) Whit Bazemore 0.522 5.201 292.87
 (L) John Force 0.505 7.694 115.13

And John Force's dry spell goes another event, losing
traction around the 330 foot marker while Bazemore stayed
smoke free until around the 1,000 foot marker, and then he
only hazed the tires. Bazemore has lane choice over
Etchells in the final round.

FUNNY CAR

Sunday's Fth Round

Morrison, CO - RIS - Results of final round eliminations in Funny Car at the 19th annual NHRA Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Whit Bazemore 0.492 5.460 271.82
 (L) Chuck Etchells 0.524 5.498 276.15

Don't bet against Etchells, "the
General," or Kim LaHaie on the mountain. Well, usually,
but this time it turned into a tire-smoking contest on the
top end and Bazemore was able to pedal and regain traction
a bit better than Etchells, winning by just over a car
length. A good show by both teams, and congratuations to
Bazemore for his second win of the season.

 (L) Mike Edwards 0.465 7.537 182.44

 (L) Larry Morgan 0.443 7.508 183.33

Moran had him covered, but his car made a move at the top
end of the track, allowing Martino by for the win.

 (W) Kurt Johnson 0.493 7.457 184.23
 (L) Troy Coughlin 0.444 7.515 183.67

Johnson power in both cars and Coughlin's holeshot was

 Martino next round.

 (W) Warren Johnson 0.487 7.432 185.52
 (L) Scott Geoffrion 0.445 7.497 183.71

6 feet.

 (L) Darrell Alderman 0.479 7.465 183.59

Alderman with the holeshot and his quickest lap of the
weekend, but not enough - Schmidt by 8 feet to earn lane
 choice agaist Adams next round.

 (W) Allen Johnson 0.441 7.477 182.70
 (L) Bruce Allen 0.484 7.480 184.01

And the sole survivning Dodge will race WJ next round,
WJ with lane choice.

 (W) Jim Yates 0.452 7.430 184.30
 (L) Ron Krisher 0.407 8.622 121.44

12:04 PM and Krisher got the holeshot, but his car was
not up to the task and Yates advances with lane choice
against Thomas.

 (L) Tom Martino 0.456 7.516 182.51

An almost dead-even start, KJ once again very fast on the top
end of the run.

 (W) Steve Schmidt 0.474 7.412 184.65
 (L) Terry Adams 0.468 7.497 183.41

 (W) Warren Johnson 0.470 7.431 185.22
 (L) Allen Johnson 0.464 7.477 183.71

 length.

 (W) Jim Yates 0.505 7.415 184.23
 (L) Mike Thomas 0.513 7.514 182.22

Thomas was slow to stage and gained no advantage by
doing so. Yates advances with lane choice against WJ in
the semifinals.

round.

PRO STOCK

5:24 PM and KJ broke something around the 330'
marker, the car nosing over sharply. Looks like the
transmission or rear end, the Safety Safari moving out
smartly to clean up a rare Pro Stock oildown.
The win is Yates' fourth of the year, and his second
at this event. He was runner-up at the inaugural event at
St. Louis three weeks ago and leads the Winston points

Angelle red lights.

 (L) Brian Ayers 0.415 8.205 150.75

Ayers' engine smoked heavily before the launch.

 (W) Matt Hines 0.420 7.849 168.72
 (L) Stephanie Reaves 0.416 8.199 162.33

Stephanie's bike headed for the center line and she had
to correct a bunch. Probably didn't matter with Hines'
ET...he has lane choice against Underdahl in the
semifinals.

 (W) David Schultz 0.439 7.849 170.64
 (L) John Smith 0.305(R) 8.074 170.51

 (L) David Schultz 0.395(R) 7.823 170.90

5:19 PM and we wait a few minutes for the TV folks to
get ready. Then both bikes fire and move to the starting
line. And Schultz loses with low ET of the meet and a
0.005-second red light. Tough break, but Hines benefits
and continues to win, this his fourth of the season.

   (R) = Red light foul

FEDERAL-MOGUL DRAGSTER

Sunday's 2nd Round

Morrison, CO - RIS - Results of round 2 eliminations in Federal-Mogul Dragster at the 19th annual NHRA Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Bill McCornack 0.405 5.919 239.42
 (L) Tim Baxter 0.429 5.911 238.41

These two posted identical ETs in round
one, so this promised to be a very close drag race. And
the race lived up to the forecast, McCornack with a small
holeshot, launching with the wheels a couple feet in the
air and then hanging on to win by less than six feet, just
0.016 seconds. It was worth the haf-hour wait while the
sprinkles passed through....

 (W) Mark Taliaferro 0.503 5.899 236.03
 (L) Michael Bartone 0.445 5.972 233.03

And this one was even closer, Bartone with the
holeshot, but unable to hold off Taliaferro's hard charge
on the top end and losing by just over five feet.

 (W) David Wells 0.536 5.936 234.25
     was unopposed

Wells launched hard, the wheels in the air for the
first 100 feet, but came up just a bit short and lost lane
choice to McCornack in round three.

 (W) Jay Payne 0.520 5.818 240.12
 (L) Darryl Hitchman 0.455 11.938 82.58

Hitchman's car wouldn't go into reverse and was pushed
back to the starting line following the burnout. Despite
all the help, the race was over almost immediately, Hitchman
spinnig and smoking the tires, shaking hard and shutting
off, while Payne demonstrates almost a tenth of a second
advantage over Taliaferro to get lane choice for the semifinals.

FEDERAL-MOGUL DRAGSTER

Sunday's 3rd Round

Morrison, CO - RIS - Results of round 3 eliminations in Federal-Mogul Dragster at the 19th annual NHRA Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Bill McCornack 0.445 5.983 238.15
 (L) David Wells 0.515 5.951 234.00

McCornack uses a holeshot to win this one, two good runs.

 (W) Mark Taliaferro 0.490 5.869 235.54
 (L) Jay Payne 0.390(R) 5.938 236.09

A big upset, Payne picking the front wheels up and
turning the red bulbs on, and then heading right at the
330-foot reflector. He pedaled and managed to miss it, but
ony by inches. meanwhile, Taliaferro made a very nice
pass, his best of the weekend, to advance to the final
round with lane choice over McCornack.

   (R) = Red light foul

FEDERAL-MOGUL DRAGSTER

Sunday's Fth Round

Morrison, CO - RIS - Results of final round eliminations in Federal-Mogul Dragster at the 19th annual NHRA Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Mark Taliaferro 0.476 5.924 235.66
 (L) Bill McCornack 0.442 6.352 217.86

Based on prior form, Taliaferro was a
heavy favorite, but he left the door open, his car headed
right for the 330-foot reflector and Taliaferro having to pedal
and steer sharply away to stay in his lane. But McCornack
was unable to take advantage of the opportunity, his engine
dropping a couple cylinders, spewing raw fuel from the
headers.

Congratulations to Taliaferro for taking on some
pretty tough customers and coming out on top of the heap.

FEDERAL-MOGUL FUNNY CAR

Sunday's 2nd Round

Morrison, CO - RIS - Results of round 2 eliminations in Federal-Mogul Funny Car at the 19th annual NHRA Mopar Parts Mile-High Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Stan Smith 0.456 6.084 232.79
 (L) Johnny Gray 0.479 6.165 234.68

Gray has been on a winning streak lately.
But the streak comes to an end, Gray's car shaking a bit on
the pad and Smith streaking away for a surprisingly easy
win against Gray's worst run of the weekend.

 (W) Vern Moats 0.472 6.067 237.46
 (L) L.E. Ledent 0.471 6.077 231.42

Wow! Ledent's car was lined up a bit crooked and went
toward the center line, forcing him to pedal and swerve
back into the groove. That probably cost him the race, the
margin at the other end just three feet.

 (W) Todd Paton 0.490 11.318 76.07
 (L) Tony Bartone 0.277(R) 11.227 65.64

Tony threw this one away, Paton chattering the tires
and getting completely out of the throttle on the launch.
That gives lane choice to Moats in the semifinal round.

 (W) Cy Chesterman 0.440 5.922 238.15
 (L) Todd Simpson 0.454 6.065 233.76

Chesterman just plain outran Simpson here, both drivers
making their best pass of the weekend. That gives
Chesterman lane choice against Smith in the semifinals.

   (R) = Red light foul

 (L) Stan Smith 0.502 8.647 105.07

Chesterman was vulnerable - his car going
silent around 1,000 feet. But Smith launched, shook,
broke something, and shut it off.

 (W) Vern Moats 0.475 6.101 234.37
 (L) Todd Paton 0.456 6.253 217.39

Moats dodged the bullet on this one, his car getting
way out of shape and swerving all over the lane, missing the
center line by millimeters. He will have lane choice
against Chesterman in the final round.

 (L) Vern Moats 0.520 6.054 237.90

5:15 PM and Moats was the consistent runner coming
into this final round, while Chesterman has been hot and
cold.
This round, however, he was hot and easily bested the
gritty performance by Moats today. Congratulations to
Chesterman, whose hot streak continues.

These two made their burnouts and staged, and then a
rat or a rabbit ran into the box with the timing beams, so
the starter shut them off while animal control went to work
to remove the rodent. It was a rabbit....these two will
run in a few minutes.
Quick recovery after the attack of the killer rabbit.

EVENT NOTES

Sunday's 3rd Round Notes

MORRISON, CO - RIS -:
We ae once again watching the raindrops fall - this time it's a
little more serious, enough to wet the track surface and make it
shiney. The rain started about 2:40 M, in the middle of Super
Gas round 4.
