Friday's 1st Session

MOHNTON, PA - RIS - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals, listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, position in order following run. :

Right Lane: Rit Pustari Runs 5.161/280.89 Psn # 1

4:28 PM We start out with a new car check out pass. He
motors on through with a soft setup and no problems.

Left Lane: Doug Foxworth Runs 6.242/139.27 Psn # 3
Right Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 4.690/299.50 Psn # 1

Scelzi leaves with the front wheels in the air, sets them
back down, and then just slightly hazes the rear tires on the
top end. Foxworth blazes the tires around 330' mark and then
gets real loose. The car makes a move toward the centerline.
Then apparently put some oil out on the track just before the
finish line as the Safety Safari trucks and sweeper roll.

Left Lane: Pat Dakin Runs 4.910/287.17 Psn # 2
Right Lane: Joe Amato Runs 5.013/216.39 Psn # 3

Amato is on a pass until just past half track, then he
drops a cylinder and has little flash of flame. He had Dakin
covered by a bunch until that point. Dakin lays down a good
pass to start tuning for the rest of the weekend.

Left Lane: Bob Vandergriff Runs 4.786/298.70 Psn # 2
Right Lane: Kenny Bernstein Runs 4.919/254.23 Psn # 4

This is the debut of Lee Beard as crew chief for the Bud
King racing team. Kenny hazed the tires just past half track,
but stayed with it, and will have a number to start with.
Vandergriff lays down a good clean pass.

Left Lane: Rhonda Hartman Runs 5.680/163.48 Psn # 7
Right Lane: Tony Schumacher Runs 11.856/ 81.82 Psn # 9

Schumacher is up in smoke as soon as he hits the
throttle. Hartman blazes the big Goodyear slicks just past
half track. She lifts and just coast on through the
quarter-mile.

Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 6.548/125.40 Psn #10
Right Lane: Cory McClenathan Runs 4.929/279.93 Psn # 5

Both cars loses traction right before half track, and
that is when Head lifts and Cory pedals it, but goes back up
in smoke. He stayed with it leaving a big cloud of tire smoke
in his trail.

Left Lane: Mike Dunn Runs 11.259/ 80.09 Psn #12
Right Lane: Eddie Hill Runs 4.802/276.41 Psn # 3

Dunn bouncing on the launch, and then clicks it off.
Eddie is on a good pass until he started mixing up the
cylinders on the top end.

Left Lane: Larry Dixon, Jr. Runs 6.709/123.01 Psn #13
Right Lane: Scott Kalitta Runs 4.645/313.80 Psn # 1

Kalitta with one of their better runs in a while. That is a new
track speed record. Dixon is up in smoke before 330' mark, and
clicks it off.

Left Lane: Shelly Anderson Runs 4.854/297.91 Psn # 5
Right Lane: Cristen Powell Runs 5.432/245.63 Psn #11

Shelly gets down the track and into the number five slot.
Christen goes up in smoke at half track, she pedals it, then
when she gets back into it she really blisters the big Goodyears.
She stays with it.

Left Lane: Bruce Sarver Runs 4.858/302.82 Psn # 6

Sarver with Johnny West doing the tuning for the now
departed Lee Beard, show they can still get the car from point
A to point B and jump into the top half of the field. That
is it for Top Fuel and we have a slow 6.709 bump.

12:42 PM The third session for the long skinny cars, and
we start with Kalitta on top with a 4.645 and Hartman sitting
in that bump spot with a 5.680. The top four are in the .60s.
Hartman can not get it in reverse and they finally send her on
through. Cory sitting there patiently and launches hard,
right at the 330' mark he drops a cylinder or two, and then
hazes the tires from a 1000 foot on.

Left Lane: Jim Head Runs 5.425/179.14 Now # 5
                       Best prior run: 4.735/276.66 Was # 5
Right Lane: Eddie Hill Runs 4.900/270.59 Now # 8
                       Best prior run: 4.802/276.41 Was # 8

Both cars blow off the tires at half track, they both
pedal it and Eddie motors on through for a 4.900 for no help.
Head goes back up in smoke and decides to lift.

Left Lane: Mike Dunn Runs 5.056/266.35 Now #14
                       Best prior run: 9.630/ 75.78 Was #19

                       Best prior run: 4.645/313.80 Was # 1

Hartman is in danger of getting knock out of the show
here, and Scott is in the lane he laid down the .64 in
yesterday. Dunn smokes the tires right before half track, but
stays in it with smoke bellowing off the slicks. Kalitta is on a
pass until about 1000 foot, that is when the Kalitta engine starts
mixing up the cylinders, and then it starts eating itself up.
There is a big puff of smoke out the engine past the finish
line, and we have a little clean-up.

Left Lane: Larry Dixon, Jr. Runs 5.140/274.55 Now # 2
                       Best prior run: 4.673/308.43 Was # 2

Best prior run: 5.432/245.63 Was #16

Christen is up in smoke before she gets to the Christmas
tree, while Dixon goes up in smoke prior to half track, but
keeps his foot pegged to the mat and blisters the tires
through the quarter-mile.

Left Lane: Shelly Anderson Runs 4.743/287.08 Now # 6
Best prior run: 4.854/297.91 Was #10
Right Lane: Gary Scelzi Runs 6.096/140.09 Now # 4
                       Best prior run: 4.690/299.50 Was # 4

Shelly continues to crept up on the rest of the field,
and was mixing up cylinders in the lights. Scelzi drops a
cylinder around the 200 foot mark and the goes up in smoke by
the 330 foot mark.

Left Lane: Bruce Sarver Runs 8.668/ 84.02 Now #10
Best prior run: 4.819/293.73 Was #10
Right Lane: Joe Amato Runs 5.066/267.77 Now #13
Best prior run: 5.013/216.39 Was #13

Sarver is up in smoke immediately and when he pedals it
the engine pitches the blower belt. Amato loses traction
around half track, pedals it, goes back up in smoke, but stays
with this time. He is still not in the 4's.

Left Lane: Doug Foxworth Runs 5.133/258.17 Now #15
Best prior run: 6.242/139.27 Was #19
Right Lane: Kenny Bernstein Runs 4.826/294.40 Now # 3
                       Best prior run: 4.683/314.24 Was # 3

Foxworth drops a cylinder right off the stating line, and
he stays with it then smokes the tires. This is when the
trouble sets in by really mixing up the cylinders, and then
pitches the blower belt about the same time there is a big
fireball. He is able to get it stopped safely, while throwing
parts and oil all over the track. Clean-up time now.
Bernstein was on a pass until he loses a cylinder.

Left Lane: Vicky Fanning Runs 7.382/122.73 Now #20
                       No prior time

Vicky making her first appearance this weekend in the cow
car. She will have go quicker than 5.161 to make the show.
She does not do it has she problems early in the run, just not
being able to get all eight to fire. Schumacher smokes the
tires at half track.

Left Lane: Pat Dakin Runs 9.607/ 83.97 Now #11
Best prior run: 4.910/287.17 Was #11

Dakin launches hard gets it up on the slicks, and
then it looked like he started to get a little tire shake, and
clicks it off.

Left Lane: Bob Vandergriff No Time Now # 8
                       Best prior run: 4.786/298.70 Was # 8

Vandergriff fires the car and as soon he does they shut
it off. Apparently spotting a problem, the crew is not happy
with this situation.

That is it for Top Fuel and Scott stays on top, while the bump
is now Rit Pustari's 5.161 which is one this team's better
passes.

 (W) Shelly Anderson 0.510 4.945 263.77
 (L) Cristen Powell 0.529 7.367 102.23

11:02 AM Here we go with Top Fuel, and two of the
Queens of the sport. Both cars launch hard and are glued
together until right before the 330' mark and that is when
Christen loses traction and ends her day in a big cloud of
tire smoke. Shelly starts spinning the tires in the middle
of the track, and finally clicks it off when Christen is
not in her sights.

 (W) Mike Dunn 0.489 4.867 293.15
 (L) Bruce Sarver 0.503 7.474 101.40

Dunn rockets off the starting line with the front
tires in the air, and then has trouble with traction in the
middle off the track similar to Shelly. Meanwhile Sarver
is having problems of his own as he drops a cylinder right
off the starting line, and then the engine completely lets
go. Followed by a huge fireball and parts scattering on to
the track. This all started around 200 feet down track
and ends way past the finish line. In the post race
interview with Bruce, he was accompanied by about 1/4 of the
crank shaft. This exemplified just how violent the explosion
was Bruce suffered.

 (W) Cory McClenathan 0.495 4.811 291.54
 (L) Bob Vandergriff 0.446 6.043 148.71

11:57 AM We are back, Vandergriff gets a jump on the
light and then goes up in tire smoke at the 330' mark.
Cory was spinning his tires all the way down track, but did
not smoke the tires until around 1000'.

 (L) Pat Dakin 0.486 5.097 256.55

Both cars leave together, then Dakin loses traction
and boils the tires, at the same time Kenny gets
completely off and back on to the throttle. Kenny does a
great job negotiating this tricky track.

 (W) Scott Kalitta 0.481 4.751 304.15
 (L) Tony Schumacher 0.496 6.035 146.55

gives Kalitta the win. Kalitta with the quickest pass of
the round, so far.

 (L) Gary Scelzi 0.463 6.871 121.53

Scelzi starts to shake the tires, pedals it, then really starts to
blister the tires. Amato is able to do what no one else has been
able to, get down the right lane.

 (W) Jim Head 0.486 4.815 296.15
 (L) Rhonda Hartman 0.503 8.820 81.80

Hartman is up in smoke at the 200 foot mark, while Head
motors to his fifth consecutive round win.

 (W) Larry Dixon, Jr. 0.494 5.062 291.92
 (L) Eddie Hill 0.499 5.480 216.03

Dixon and Hill leave together, then Dixon starts to
lose traction and pedals it. Hill then goes up in smoke.
When he pedaled it, Dixon had already recovered and was
on his way to a round one victory. Dixon's parachute do
not deploy, but he is able to get the car stopped safely.
That is it for Top Fuel, it is now time for those Funny Car.
