TOP FUEL DRAGSTER

Sunday's 1st Round

MOHNTON, PA - RIS - Results of round 1 eliminations in Top Fuel at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Shelly Anderson 0.510 4.945 263.77
 (L) Cristen Powell 0.529 7.367 102.23

11:02 AM Here we go with Top Fuel, and two of the
Queens of the sport. Both cars launch hard and are glued
together until right before the 330' mark and that is when
Christen loses traction and ends her day in a big cloud of
tire smoke. Shelly starts spinning the tires in the middle
of the track, and finally clicks it off when Christen is
not in her sights.

 (W) Mike Dunn 0.489 4.867 293.15
 (L) Bruce Sarver 0.503 7.474 101.40

Dunn rockets off the starting line with the front
tires in the air, and then has trouble with traction in the
middle off the track similar to Shelly. Meanwhile Sarver
is having problems of his own as he drops a cylinder right
off the starting line, and then the engine completely lets
go. Followed by a huge fireball and parts scattering on to
the track. This all started around 200 feet down track
and ends way past the finish line. In the post race
interview with Bruce, he was accompanied by about 1/4 of the
crank shaft. This exemplified just how violent the explosion
was Bruce suffered.

 (W) Cory McClenathan 0.495 4.811 291.54
 (L) Bob Vandergriff 0.446 6.043 148.71

11:57 AM We are back, Vandergriff gets a jump on the
light and then goes up in tire smoke at the 330' mark.
Cory was spinning his tires all the way down track, but did
not smoke the tires until around 1000'.

 (W) Kenny Bernstein 0.481 4.915 299.70
 (L) Pat Dakin 0.486 5.097 256.55

Both cars leave together, then Dakin loses traction
and boils the tires, at the same time Kenny gets
completely off and back on to the throttle. Kenny does a
great job negotiating this tricky track.

 (W) Scott Kalitta 0.481 4.751 304.15
 (L) Tony Schumacher 0.496 6.035 146.55

Schumacher goes up in smoke at the 330' mark, and this
gives Kalitta the win. Kalitta with the quickest pass of
the round, so far.

 (W) Joe Amato 0.458 4.893 287.72
 (L) Gary Scelzi 0.463 6.871 121.53

Scelzi starts to shake the tires, pedals it, then really starts to
blister the tires. Amato is able to do what no one else has been
able to, get down the right lane.

 (W) Jim Head 0.486 4.815 296.15
 (L) Rhonda Hartman 0.503 8.820 81.80

Hartman is up in smoke at the 200 foot mark, while Head
motors to his fifth consecutive round win.

 (W) Larry Dixon, Jr. 0.494 5.062 291.92
 (L) Eddie Hill 0.499 5.480 216.03

Dixon and Hill leave together, then Dixon starts to
lose traction and pedals it. Hill then goes up in smoke.
When he pedaled it, Dixon had already recovered and was
on his way to a round one victory. Dixon's parachute do
not deploy, but he is able to get the car stopped safely.
That is it for Top Fuel, it is now time for those Funny Car.

12:13 PM

TOP FUEL DRAGSTER

Sunday's 2nd Round

MOHNTON, PA - RIS - Results of round 2 eliminations in Top Fuel at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Kenny Bernstein 0.478 4.893 299.20
 (L) Larry Dixon, Jr. 0.473 5.050 285.89

2:11 PM We start here with the battle of the
breweries, Kenny with lane choice. Both cars leave
together, and stay stuck to the track all the way down the
track. Both of them dropping cylinders, Bernstein losing
one hole, and Dixon mixing them up pretty good.

 (W) Jim Head 0.472 4.824 296.34
 (L) Mike Dunn 0.494 4.834 288.09

Head gets a jump on the starting line, then Dunn starts to
feel the car lose traction, and grabs the brake hard. Head
moves on for the win.

 (W) Cory McClenathan 0.492 4.739 313.04
 (L) Joe Amato 0.486 4.788 296.15

This is a great side by side drag race until a 1000' mark when
Joe starts to spin the tires ever so slightly and Cory motors on by
for the win. He will have lane choice over Head in the rematch
of the finals from the U.S. Nationals.

 (W) Scott Kalitta 0.494 4.707 302.72
 (L) Shelly Anderson 0.543 5.015 272.97

Kalitta continuing to show power and consistency, that wins
races. Shelly getting real loose at mid-track. Kalitta with lane
choice over Bernstein in the semis.

Sunday's 3rd Round

MOHNTON, PA - RIS - Results of round 3 eliminations in Top Fuel at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Cory McClenathan 0.464 4.867 306.74
 (L) Jim Head 0.497 5.052 219.56

4:23 PM The clean up is completed, and we have Alan
Johnson over in Head's lane. Cory losing traction
right off the starting line, but is able to pedal it and
make up the difference and the are dead even at 1000 feet.
Head was smoking the tires just pass half track and then
pitches the blower belt.

 (W) Kenny Bernstein 0.499 4.750 300.60
 (L) Scott Kalitta 0.489 4.769 308.32

Kalitta gets out on Kenny, but Bernstein is able to
make up the difference. He just noses out Kalitta at the
finish line. Bernstein was mixing up the cylinders in the
lights. Bernstein with lane choice.

TOP FUEL DRAGSTER

Sunday's Fth Round

MOHNTON, PA - RIS - Results of final round eliminations in Top Fuel at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Cory McClenathan 0.462 4.753 305.29
 (L) Kenny Bernstein 0.454 4.790 299.90

Bernstein in his first final since Atlanta back in
April, and is the defending champion of the Keystone
Nationals. The new crew chief Lee Beard explained he is
really just observing and learning how this operation works.
Cory is in his sixth straight final round. Cory is now 5
for 6 as he just noses out Bernstein. They are side by
side all the way down the track. Cory was able to just get
around Bernstein as he began to mix up the cylinders on the
top end.

FUNNY CAR

Sunday's 1st Round

MOHNTON, PA - RIS - Results of round 1 eliminations in Funny Car at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Cruz Pedregon 0.504 5.544 248.89
 (L) Freddie Neely 0.498 9.418 81.38

     12:11 PM .... Overcast skies, 74 degrees, 65% humidity,
great conditions for a drag race. This one was all Pedregon, but
it didn't look that way at the start, as Neely visibly moved first
and led Pedregon past the tree... But unfortunately Neely's car
was driving toward the centerline right from the start, and he was
forced to lift. Cruz pedalled to get thru some top end tire smoke,
but Freddie had already given up.

 (W) Jim Epler 0.504 5.459 263.85
 (L) Ron Capps 0.489 5.994 244.83

This one became a pedalling contest, Capps off to a big lead
in the first eighth-mile, but the car smoked the tires first and
worse, and Epler was able to pedal his way to the finish in the
Paul Smith-owned machine...

 (W) Chuck Etchells 0.501 5.127 303.13
 (L) Tony Pedregon 0.491 5.456 248.27

This isn't exactly the David & Goliath battle that the qualifying
times would indicate... but it wasn't exactly an upset, either.
Again the tires were blazing on the top end, but it was worse in
the right lane... lots worse. This isn't exactly a big confidence
builder for Force, up next...

 (W) John Force 0.489 5.005 307.48
 (L) Wyatt Radke 0.491 6.525 140.69

Radke has a three-year deal here, and is still in the building
process as far as this new team is concerned... but he has his
hands full right here, Force straight and smooth to the finish,
actually improving on his qualifying time in a round where
everyone else is struggling to keep their heads above water...
Radke was up in smoke at the eighth-mile mark, just like so
many before him...

 (W) Whit Bazemore 0.505 5.551 259.36
 (L) Tom Hoover 0.500 7.355 121.67

Bazemore smoked the tires at 800', but by that time Hoover
was already up in smoke and off the throttle completely... Whit
pedalled once just off the pad, but we never saw smoke at that
point... Team Winston lost lane choice to Cruz, and that
may be critical.

 (W) Mark Oswald 0.555 5.432 262.00
 (L) Al Hofmann 0.529 7.734 108.35

Hofmann smoked the tires and got way crossed up, over against the wall and very nearly smacked the wall with the rear
end of the car... he really had no chance to recover, the
proximity of the wall really limiting his options... Meanwhile
Oswald was smoking and pedalling his way to the finish... it
wasn't pretty but it paid off.

 (W) Dean Skuza 0.490 5.238 282.22
 (L) Del Worsham 0.473 5.376 261.32

Skuza once again does a huge burnout... it's becoming a
trademark for him. Here, we got less smoke than most of the
previous matchups, both cars making it at least 900' before the
tires let go... they pedalled and recovered, but it was Skuza first
across the stripe.

 (W) Randy Anderson 0.511 5.509 274.55
 (L) Gary Densham 0.509 6.222 163.01

It looked like Anderson was on and off the throttle all the way
from the start, at least three times, but it worked, not a trace of
tire smoke from the Parts America car... Densham made it to
halftrack before he saw smoke, but when it came, in came in
force, and his day was over... that's the last pair, and you can
bet these guys are glad to get it behind them... 12:36 PM

FUNNY CAR

Sunday's 2nd Round

MOHNTON, PA - RIS - Results of round 2 eliminations in Funny Car at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Cruz Pedregon 0.480 5.215 282.66
 (L) Whit Bazemore 0.497 5.573 259.06

      2:19 PM ... and the on-again, off-again clouds have
returned, the thermometer registering 72 degrees, 63% humidity,
and 29.61 on the barometer... that's an adjusted altitude of
somewhere around 4500', according to the numbers I saw
outside... Here, lane choice proves to be critical, as Bazemore
was up in smoke by 400', pedalled, and all he got was more
smoke.

 (W) Chuck Etchells 0.513 5.131 297.81
 (L) Randy Anderson 0.504 5.863 185.64

Happy Birthday to Anderson's crew chief Larry Frazier. Randy
didn't give much of a present, losing the same round as his sister
when he lost traction at mid-track...

 (W) John Force 0.509 5.076 303.54
 (L) Jim Epler 0.529 7.157 118.56

Epler was never ahead but he was within striking range until
the car drove to the centerline and he was forced to abort... all
the while, a dejected Whit Bazemore sits on the wall and
watches his championship hopes dissolve... Force is certainly
flexing his muscle today. Epler celebrated his 40th birthday here
this weekend, by the way.

 (W) Dean Skuza 0.507 5.169 298.40
 (L) Mark Oswald 0.515 5.672 196.46

Oswald was only 0.02 behind at the 330' mark, but that
stretched to 0.08 at halftrack and two tenths at 1000' when the
tire smoke gremlins took his chances away...

FUNNY CAR

Sunday's 3rd Round

MOHNTON, PA - RIS - Results of round 3 eliminations in Funny Car at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Chuck Etchells 0.494 5.131 298.60
 (L) Dean Skuza 0.494 6.615 142.09

4:09 PM ... If you want consistency, Etchells is your man, a
twelve, thirteen, and now another thirteen in eliminations today.
Chuck says his Avenger isn't even close to smoking the tires,
either, so as long as he can stay in that left lane for the finals he
should be all set... Skuza went up in smoke at pretty much the
same point everybody else has... 4-500' off the starting line.

 (W) John Force 0.467 5.082 302.72
 (L) Cruz Pedregon 0.471 5.436 214.79

Force was quicker off the line and to 60', but at 330' Cruz
was starting to reel him in, but then the traction went away and
the McDonald's machine was done for the day. There's oil down
in the shutdown area, in the right side, so we're on hold for a few
minutes then we'll move right to the Top Fuel Dragsters... 4:16
PM

FUNNY CAR

Sunday's Fth Round

MOHNTON, PA - RIS - Results of final round eliminations in Funny Car at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) John Force 0.496 5.083 305.39
 (L) Chuck Etchells 0.494 5.282 224.66

5:45 PM ... Just like they wrote the script, the two titans of
the weekend match up for all the marbles here in the final
round... Force surely has the edge in the left lane, but you can't
count out Etchells with all his consistency today... And it's
Force, but he pulled this one out at the last minute, the Avenger
ahead from the start all the way down to almost 1000', then he
started losing traction and the engine dropped a cylinder, that
drove him over out of the groove and Force snuck ahead.
Adding insult to injury, the blower banged hard on the Kendall
machine just as he crossed the finish. Congrats to Force and the
Castrol crew, on this, their forth win of '97!!

PRO STOCK

Sunday's 1st Round

MOHNTON, PA - RIS - Results of round 1 eliminations in Pro Stock at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Mike Edwards 0.470 7.069 196.29
 (L) Frank Iaconio 0.532 7.126 171.98

12:41 PM and the clouds are starting to break up, just what
these guys DON'T want to see... 72 degrees, 64% humidity,
31.16 on the barometer... Here, it appeared that Edwards rolled
the lights a bit, a terrible 1.10 60' the result, but still managed to
trounce a slowing Iaconio on the top end...

 (W) Bruce Allen 0.469 7.016 195.99
 (L) Mike Thomas 0.471 7.885 129.68

Thomas started meandering around in the right lane and
discretion overcame valor...

 (W) Kurt Johnson 0.462 6.962 197.23
 (L) Steve Schmidt 0.467 7.009 196.37

Looks like lane choice may become a factor in this category
just like with the nitro cars... Well, Schmidt was straight down
the centerline, no perceptible tire spinning on the top end, Kurt
just too stout today.

 (W) Mike Bell 0.445 6.996 197.15
 (L) Larry Nance 0.484 7.314 157.75

Nance gets way loose on the top end, drifting over toward
the centerline then back over close to the wall as he makes the
correction... he wisely got off the throttle, and Bell advances.

 (W) Larry Morgan 0.467 6.991 196.72
 (L) Grant Lewis 0.295(R) 9.427 101.47

 (W) George Marnell 0.482 7.011 197.15
 (L) Tom Hammonds 0.375(R) 9.129 88.70

Hammonds car crept forward when he brought the revs up,
causing the redlight to shine on his lane...

 (W) Warren Johnson 0.521 6.965 197.80
 (L) Mark Osborne 0.508 7.092 193.21

Osborne got off the line first and Kenny Lee did his job with
the tune-up, but WJ just had too many horses on the top end
here...

 (W) Jim Yates 0.454 6.962 197.62
 (L) Ron Krisher 0.402 7.076 194.93

Krisher gets a psychic reaction time and looks to upset the
Winston Champ, but his plans are foiled when he got out of
shape at mid-track drifted out of the groove... that's all the hot
rods, the bikes are up next... 12:55 PM

   (R) = Red light foul

PRO STOCK

Sunday's 2nd Round

MOHNTON, PA - RIS - Results of round 2 eliminations in Pro Stock at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Larry Morgan 0.464 6.996 196.03
 (L) George Marnell 0.489 7.050 195.52

2:34 PM and Morgan is on a tear this weekend, another
six, taking out Marnell and advancing him to the
semifinals... More overcast skies mean the performances may
step up another notch this afternoon... 75 degrees, 64%
humidity, 29.76 barometer.

 (W) Warren Johnson 0.457 6.985 196.03
 (L) Bruce Allen 0.458 7.045 195.05

WJ gets off the line with a tiny holeshot and a 1.024
60' time and never looked back...

 (W) Mike Bell 0.435 7.010 196.29
 (L) Kurt Johnson 0.476 7.001 197.02

Bell's got his work cut out for him here... but he's
up to it, a big headstart enough to win by 0.032 secs., or
about 9 feet. So Kurt's streak is ended, by a guy that had
never won a round in NHRA competition before today.

 (W) Jim Yates 0.463 6.967 196.93 (L) Mike Edwards 0.443 7.026 196.29

Edwards needs a large holeshot here, and he only got a
medium... so now there are only four remaining... 2:40
PM

MOHNTON, PA - RIS - Results of round 3 eliminations in Pro Stock at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Mike Bell 0.409 7.020 196.03
 (L) Warren Johnson 0.467 6.964 197.84

      4:02 PM and WJ's great 1.024 in 60' wasn't enough to
overcome Bell's huge headstart... this was a nail-biter all the way
to the stripe, just 0.002 secs. at the finish, or about 5 inches.

 (W) Jim Yates 0.499 6.966 197.45
 (L) Larry Morgan 0.460 7.013 195.86

Larry Morgan gets out ahead of Yates, can he duplicate
Bell's upset??... Not today, the margin at the stripe here a big (by
comparison) 0.008 seconds, or just over 2 feet. So the guy
who'd never been past the first round is into the final, against the
defending event and Winston Champ... and it's going to be a
barn-burner!

FEDERAL-MOGUL FUNNY CAR

Sunday's 2nd Round

MOHNTON, PA - RIS - Results of round 2 eliminations in Federal-Mogul Funny Car at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Frank Manzo 0.477 5.805 247.86
 (L) Bob Newberry 0.470 5.870 246.57

1:46 PM, full sunshine now... man, what a crew
chief's nightmare, the sun out brightly one minute and full
cloud cover the next. The track surface temperature is 123
degrees right now, that's about as hot as these guys can
stand. Manzo waited until the last minute to take the left
side, then left right with Newberry. He drifted over
against the left wall but never lifted, and managed a slim
0.05 sec win over the 'Newb...

 (W) Todd Paton 0.501 6.165 193.00
 (L) Craig Gleason (Broke)

Gleason is a no-show this round, so Paton goes for lane
choice but has to pedal at midtrack, hurting his
chances... then he got bigtime sideways on the top end,
bouncing hard, and had to lift altogether...

 (W) Tony Bartone 0.504 5.763 249.44
 (L) Jim Lape 0.452 6.517 157.64

Both northeasterners... And Lape drifts over toward the wall,
more, more, and he finally had to wrestle the car back into
the center of the lane, getting it sideways in the
process... by that time Bartone was long gone.

 (W) Tim Slagle 0.489 5.950 239.68
 (L) John Sieger 0.469 6.111 228.25

Neither driver getting a big advantage at the start,
then the Roma Steel Erectors machine of Sieger drifts right
and out of the groove... So the Jerr-Dan car takes a big
win, and a trip into the semifinals... 1:58 PM

the 60' mark... He marches on into the final.

 (W) Frank Manzo 0.430 5.741 249.44
 (L) Tony Bartone 0.475 5.815 248.07

Manzo cuts down the tree, and lays down a new track
record both ends, ET and speed. Bartone gets loose in the
middle of the track, but he stays with it. Manzo with lane choice
in the final.

 (L) Todd Paton 0.450 5.970 202.52

5:25 PM ... And with a puff of smoke on the top end, Frank
Manzo may just have wrapped up the Championship for '97...
Paton's engine expired at 1000', the Safety Safari trucks roll to
clean up the remains, most of which are well past the finishline...
Manzo's had a great year, this his fourth national event win of
'97. Congrats!!

 (L) Dennis Meli E/A 8.92 0.536 8.369 -0.551

COMP ELIMINATOR

Sunday's 3rd Round

MOHNTON, PA - RIS - Results of round 3 eliminations in Competition Eliminator at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals:

W/L Driver Class Index RT ET Ov/Un

 (L) Jerry Hemmingson B/A 7.96 (Broke)

2:46 PM ... Hemmingson gets his 0.01 CIC back for this
round, so this ought to be a pretty even matchup... And there's a
problem with the tree, Hemmingson not getting the green, but
he's still the winner as Ritter redlighted his chances away. If that
weren't the case, we'd have a rerun on this one. So
Hemmingson's crew pushes him back, but he'll be back next
round.

 (W) Ian Landies A/SR 8.60 0.514 8.075 -0.525
 (L) Ray Smith A/EA 8.12 0.589 7.550 -0.570

CompuLink wiz Bob Brockmeyer has just strung a new wire
from the starting line out to the tree, and we're back in
business... 2:52 PM. And Smith makes a valiant try, but Landies
holeshot was too much...

 (W) Kevin Robb D/ED 8.16 0.562 7.605 -0.555
 (L) Jonathan Aloisio E/SM 9.06 0.585 8.525 -0.535

Couple of local big guns, here... and both use up some index,
but it was the Jenkins-motored dragster getting there first.

 (L) Charlie Greco C/EA 8.92 0.493(R) 8.358 -0.562
