Friday's 1st Session

MOHNTON, PA - RIS - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals, listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, position in order following run.:

Left Lane: John Pluchino Runs 9.391/ 90.15 Psn # 1
Right Lane: Larry Peternel No Time Psn # 2

3:11 PM... Sunny skies, 78 degrees, 63% humidity...
Peternel breaks, only moves about 3 feet, while Pluchino skates
and pedals his way to the eighth-mile mark, where he throws in
the towel.

Left Lane: Mark Osborne Runs 7.241/193.71 Psn # 1
Right Lane: Richard Carbone Runs 7.317/189.67 Psn # 2

Ozzie is in the ex-Orndorff/Eckman Pontiac that Dick
Sherman has bought, sans sponsor colors this weekend... And
he rolled the lights, with (apparently) no line lock.

Left Lane: Bob Perry Runs 7.591/182.80 Psn # 4
Right Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 7.053/195.43 Psn # 1

WJ's 60' was only 1.053, not the stuff of which records are
made...

Left Lane: Ray Franks Runs 7.145/194.42 Psn # 3
Right Lane: Mike Bell Runs 7.046/196.29 Psn # 1

Bell had a 1.039 in the first 60'... now that IS the stuff of
which records are made...

Left Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 7.100/193.46 Psn # 4
Right Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 7.080/195.77 Psn # 3

     Not bad, not bad...

Left Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 7.035/196.37 Psn # 1
Right Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 7.076/194.17 Psn # 4

A 1.035 60' for Schmidt... and you see the result on the big
end. Nice pass by the Dodge, with Eicke power again this
weekend.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 7.051/195.95 Psn # 3
Right Lane: Bill Shorts Runs 7.523/178.85 Psn #11

Good baseline for the Jeg's machine...

Left Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 7.063/194.84 Psn # 5
Right Lane: Grant Lewis Runs 7.076/195.10 Psn # 6

Couple more good baseline passes for tonight's session...

Left Lane: Tom Hammonds Runs 7.051/196.37 Psn # 3

Hammonds got released by the Nuggets... now he can
spend more time racing, I guess. Nice launch, then he bounced
some downtrack, still good enough to put him ahead of WJ.

Left Lane: Ed Heck Runs 7.151/193.59 Psn #13
Right Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 7.059/195.27 Psn # 6

Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 7.048/195.60 Psn # 4
 Right Lane: V. Gaines Runs 7.035/196.07 Psn # 2

Looks like Edwards has been burning the midnight oil since
his DNQ at Indy... And Gaines continues to impress.

Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 7.043/194.67 Psn # 4
Right Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 6.994/196.89 Psn # 1

     When you're on a roll, you're on a roll... And Kurt's on a
ROLL.

Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 7.027/194.63 Psn # 2
Right Lane: Robert Patrick Jr. Runs 7.078/196.03 Psn #15

On the other hand, Yates has been struggling for the last few
races, but a 1.037 60' here shows he may be back on track.
Looks like the left side may be a couple hundredths slower...

Left Lane: Larry Nance Runs 7.053/195.52 Psn #11
Right Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 7.023/196.72 Psn # 2

Nance carrying the colors of "Sponsor Wanted" on the doors
of his Cutlass this weekend... Nice pass by Krisher, especially
on the top end.

Left Lane: Dester Cambron Runs 7.069/194.72 Psn #15
Right Lane: George Weiler Runs 8.641/134.10 Psn #27

Bump is down to Allen Johnson's 7.076... nope, make that
Grant Lewis, at the same number, as Cambron gets in, barely.

Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 7.005/196.20 Psn # 2
Right Lane: Bob Benza Runs 10.861/ 74.58 Psn #30

Benza gets loose and has to abort, while Marnell slides in
behind Kurt with a 1.04 60' and lotsa horsepower downtrack.

Left Lane: Frank Iaconio Runs 7.007/195.77 Psn # 3
Right Lane: Adam Landolfi Runs 7.117/194.42 Psn #23

Looks like Iaconio has turned Barry Grant's program around,
fersure...

Left Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 11.730/100.71 Psn #33

Thomas shook hard and shut off... and that's all of 'em. 3:41
PM and Funny Car is up, now.

The 'Raffleman' gets out of the groove and has to lift....
Iaconio fails to improve, surprisingly...

Thomas ever-so-barely bumps Geoffrion, and places himself
on the bubble... not good news, considering WJ still hasn't run
tonight.

Left Lane: Richard Carbone Runs 7.176/191.81 Now #29
Best prior run: 7.317/189.67 Was #30

Best prior run: 7.241/193.71 Was #31

WJ parlays a 1.022 60' time to a polesitting quartermile
pace...

Best prior run: 7.591/182.80 Was #34

The final car, here.... and he leaves before the tree is
activated, goes 60' and shuts off... 7:58 PM and the floppers
are next.

Left Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 7.057/196.33 Now #10

     12:10 PM ... Mostly overcast skies, 71 degrees, 64%
humidity, and 29.64 on the barometer. Troy's Firebird took a
hard bounce off the pad, that surely hurt his ET, while Lewis
shook and shut off by 100'...

Best prior run: 7.035/196.07 Was #14

Gaines a little too aggressive on the clutch this round, it
appears, and he clicks it by 200'...

Left Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 6.991/197.28 Now # 6
Best prior run: 7.036/195.95 Was #15

lanes... Glad to see Edwards has sorted out the problems that
plagued him at Indy...

Left Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 7.028/196.20 Now #15
Best prior run: 7.043/194.67 Was #18
Right Lane: Robert Patrick Jr. Runs 7.060/196.67 Now #23
Best prior run: 7.063/194.88 Was #23

Scott bumps the other Dodge, while the Ford still can't get
the run he needs... Scott's 60' was 1.046, BTW.

Left Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.946/194.67 Now # 1

New bump is 7.035, that's V. Gaines... Yates parlays a super
1.02 60' time into the new #1 qualifying spot... impressive
performance in weather conditions that many predicted would
not better last night's...

Left Lane: Larry Nance Runs 7.034/196.46 Now #16
Best prior run: 7.053/195.52 Was #22

Best prior run: 8.641/134.10 Was #35

Nance gets in by the smallest of margins... for now.

Left Lane: Dester Cambron Runs 7.037/195.56 Now #18
Best prior run: 7.047/195.01 Was #20

Best prior run: 7.090/193.63 Was #27

Benza's gonna need more than this 1.05 60' time to break
into this show... yep, comes up a few hundredths short.

Left Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.986/196.42 Now # 6
                       Best prior run: 7.005/196.20 Was # 7

Marnell becomes our seventh car in the sixes, but moves up
just one spot... he's had good runs every round this weekend,
and he's overdue to go deep into eliminations...

Left Lane: Frank Iaconio Runs 6.994/196.42 Now # 8
                       Best prior run: 7.007/195.77 Was # 8

Best prior run: 7.402/188.00 Was #32

Iaconio becomes number eight, with a mind-bending 1.019 in
the first 60'... somebody knows what's going on in the clutch
can, there.

Left Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 7.002/196.93 Now # 9
Best prior run: 7.041/195.90 Was #20

power...

Left Lane: Bob Perry Runs 9.003/104.34 Now #34
Best prior run: 7.591/182.80 Was #34

                       Best prior run: 6.985/196.50 Was # 6

Perry got out of shape and very close to the centerline before
he lifted... there are now nine cars in the sixes here.

Left Lane: Ray Franks Runs 7.042/196.12 Now #22
Best prior run: 7.068/195.35 Was #25

Best prior run: 7.038/194.04 Was #21

Allen improves just a thousandth, not nearly enough, and
only one session remaining... Franks installed a Schmidt
powerplant for this round, and improves, but again, not enough.

Left Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 7.038/195.56 Now #22
Best prior run: 7.076/193.92 Was #28

Best prior run: 7.019/196.16 Was #13

Would have thought that we would have seen another six
here, but it's not to be... so that's the final car of this session,
and it's Yates, Bell, WJ, Morgan, and KJ in the top five, and
Geoffrion's 7.028 in the bump spot... 12:39 PM.

PRO STOCK

Saturday's 4th Session

MOHNTON, PA - RIS - Notes from final, round 4 qualifying in Pro Stock at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals, listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run.:

Left Lane: Kurt Johnson Runs 7.034/196.93 Now # 5
                       Best prior run: 6.985/196.72 Was # 5
Right Lane: Ed Heck Runs 7.094/194.09 Now #29
Best prior run: 7.102/194.25 Was #29

4:17 PM ... Overcast skies, 71 degrees, 66% humidity, and
29.76 on the barometer... Everybody in the staging lanes is
predicting wholesale changes in the ladder... well, it didn't show
here, that's for sure.

Left Lane: Robert Patrick Jr. Runs 7.053/196.24 Now #26
Best prior run: 7.060/196.67 Was #26
Right Lane: Mike Edwards Runs 7.016/195.82 Now # 8
                       Best prior run: 6.991/197.28 Was # 8

Edwards is running their 'old' Ness car this weekend, with an
engine from Richard Maskin... basically the same setup they ran
back at Seattle, in fact.

Left Lane: Ron Krisher Runs 7.040/196.33 Now #13
Best prior run: 7.018/197.15 Was #13
Right Lane: Scott Geoffrion Runs 7.025/195.52 Now #16
Best prior run: 7.028/196.20 Was #16

Scott really had to rush to get back from running his track this
round... he'd really like to get off the bubble, here... doesn't
happen.

Left Lane: George Weiler Runs 8.171/154.98 Now #35
Best prior run: 8.495/135.44 Was #35
Right Lane: Jim Yates Runs 6.952/197.49 Now # 1
                       Best prior run: 6.946/197.67 Was # 1

The weather may be better, but I think they may have
overestimated the race track... look at all the problems the nitro
cars have been having. Well, Yates didn't do so bad... BTW, I
mis-typed his speed during the early session today, it was
197.67, not 194.67 as I reported.

Left Lane: Bob Benza Runs 7.074/194.46 Now #27
Best prior run: 7.071/194.72 Was #27
Right Lane: Larry Nance Runs 7.010/196.29 Now #13
Best prior run: 7.034/196.46 Was #18

And we have both of The Tall Guys in the show for the first
time ever... that bumps the lone Dodge, Geoffrion, and puts
Martino's 7.022 in danger...

Left Lane: Adam Landolfi Runs 8.456/116.30 Now #25
Best prior run: 7.051/196.29 Was #25
Right Lane: Dester Cambron Runs 7.102/194.21 Now #20
Best prior run: 7.037/195.56 Was #20

Both these guys come up short, and, adding insult to injury,
now there's a light mist of liquid in the left side, from the starting
line all the way out to about 125'...

Left Lane: Richard Carbone Runs 7.173/191.97 Now #30
Best prior run: 7.176/191.81 Was #30
Right Lane: George Marnell Runs 6.975/196.67 Now # 3
                       Best prior run: 6.986/196.42 Was # 7

Marnell moves up to the #3 spot with a big top end charge...
it's been a picture-perfect weekend for the Las Vegas racer, so
far...

Left Lane: Warren Johnson Runs 6.974/197.67 Now # 2
                       Best prior run: 6.975/196.54 Was # 4
Right Lane: Frank Iaconio Runs 6.991/196.29 Now # 9
                       Best prior run: 6.994/196.42 Was # 9

And Marnell's third spot didn't last long, WJ vaulting ahead
with a great run for the left side, matching Yates' top speed to
boot... Frankie's little improvement gets lost in the shuffle.

Left Lane: Mike Bell Runs 6.980/196.63 Now # 3
                       Best prior run: 6.974/197.28 Was # 3
Right Lane: Mike Thomas Runs 7.001/196.85 Now #10
Best prior run: 7.002/196.93 Was #10

More of the same for these guys... Thomas' #1 guy Terry
Adams is not running this weekend, devoting his time to Thomas
and Mark Osborne, who is running their engine this weekend.

Left Lane: Bruce Allen Runs 6.990/196.37 Now # 7
                       Best prior run: 6.985/196.50 Was # 7
Right Lane: John Pluchino Runs 7.177/187.65 Now #31
Best prior run: 7.209/187.50 Was #31

No change here, Allen dialed in for tomorrow...

Left Lane: Allen Johnson Runs 7.031/195.65 Now #19
Best prior run: 7.037/195.43 Was #21
Right Lane: Mark Osborne Runs 7.014/195.39 Now #14
Best prior run: 7.033/195.90 Was #18

I was wrong earlier when I said that Johnson was running the
Eicke engine this weekend... he's back to his Steve
Schmidt-built powerplant here. And Ozzie gets in the show,
bumping Martino and moving Troy Coughlin onto the bubble at
7.021...

Left Lane: Bill Shorts Runs 7.516/184.72 Now #33
Best prior run: 7.444/181.63 Was #33
Right Lane: Bob Perry No Time Now #34
Best prior run: 7.591/182.80 Was #34

Perry never had a chance this lap, the car rocketing forward
as soon as he brought the revs up to stage... so he left long

Left Lane: Grant Lewis Runs 7.008/196.16 Now #12
Best prior run: 7.076/195.10 Was #28
Right Lane: Ray Franks Runs 7.026/196.07 Now #20
Best prior run: 7.042/196.12 Was #23

It'll take a Hail Mary from either one of these guys to make
the show... who knows, stranger things have happened, right??
And it happens here today, the Georgia logger bumping out the
mail-order parts magnate, and now Krisher's 7.018 is in danger...

Left Lane: Tom Martino Runs 7.022/195.10 Now #18
Best prior run: 7.022/195.14 Was #18
Right Lane: Darrell Alderman Runs 7.050/194.93 Now #24
Best prior run: 7.038/195.56 Was #24

Big disappointment for the Martino camp here, missing two
races in a row... this one looked good, 1.027 in 60', but he didn't
have the steam downtrack...

Left Lane: Larry Morgan Runs 6.999/195.82 Now # 5
                       Best prior run: 6.984/196.50 Was # 5
Right Lane: Steve Schmidt Runs 7.169/169.93 Now #11
Best prior run: 7.006/197.58 Was #11

Schmidt had the better leave, 1.023 I think it was, but he
clicked it downtrack for some reason...

Left Lane: V. Gaines Runs 7.029/196.63 Now #21
Best prior run: 7.035/196.07 Was #22
Right Lane: Troy Coughlin Runs 7.027/196.33 Now #17
Best prior run: 7.021/196.03 Was #17

And neither of these machines makes the show, Coughlin
very slow off the line while Gaines had a better start but neither
was outstanding... or enough. These are the last two
unqualified cars, I think.

Right Lane: Mark Pawuk Runs 7.021/195.65 Now #18
Best prior run: 7.047/194.21 Was #25

OK, so I was wrong... Pawuk isn't in the show, either. And
this effort comes up short of the 7.018 necessary to play ball
tomorrow.

Right Lane: Tom Hammonds Runs 7.034/197.10 Now #13
Best prior run: 7.009/195.86 Was #13

OK, this is the final FINAL Pro Stock car, here... And he slips
the clutch off the line, comes back with a nice top end charge
to end the session. So it'll be Yates vs. Krisher tomorrow, #1 vs.
#16, when the factory hot rods take the stage. That's Yates'
8th pole of the year, too... 4:50 PM

PRO STOCK

Sunday's 1st Round

MOHNTON, PA - RIS - Results of round 1 eliminations in Pro Stock at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Mike Edwards 0.470 7.069 196.29
 (L) Frank Iaconio 0.532 7.126 171.98

12:41 PM and the clouds are starting to break up, just what
these guys DON'T want to see... 72 degrees, 64% humidity,
31.16 on the barometer... Here, it appeared that Edwards rolled
the lights a bit, a terrible 1.10 60' the result, but still managed to
trounce a slowing Iaconio on the top end...

 (W) Bruce Allen 0.469 7.016 195.99
 (L) Mike Thomas 0.471 7.885 129.68

Thomas started meandering around in the right lane and
discretion overcame valor...

 (W) Kurt Johnson 0.462 6.962 197.23
 (L) Steve Schmidt 0.467 7.009 196.37

Looks like lane choice may become a factor in this category
just like with the nitro cars... Well, Schmidt was straight down
the centerline, no perceptible tire spinning on the top end, Kurt
just too stout today.

 (W) Mike Bell 0.445 6.996 197.15
 (L) Larry Nance 0.484 7.314 157.75

Nance gets way loose on the top end, drifting over toward
the centerline then back over close to the wall as he makes the
correction... he wisely got off the throttle, and Bell advances.

 (W) Larry Morgan 0.467 6.991 196.72
 (L) Grant Lewis 0.295(R) 9.427 101.47

 (W) George Marnell 0.482 7.011 197.15
 (L) Tom Hammonds 0.375(R) 9.129 88.70

Hammonds car crept forward when he brought the revs up,
causing the redlight to shine on his lane...

 (W) Warren Johnson 0.521 6.965 197.80
 (L) Mark Osborne 0.508 7.092 193.21

Osborne got off the line first and Kenny Lee did his job with
the tune-up, but WJ just had too many horses on the top end
here...

 (W) Jim Yates 0.454 6.962 197.62
 (L) Ron Krisher 0.402 7.076 194.93

Krisher gets a psychic reaction time and looks to upset the
Winston Champ, but his plans are foiled when he got out of
shape at mid-track drifted out of the groove... that's all the hot
rods, the bikes are up next... 12:55 PM

   (R) = Red light foul

PRO STOCK

Sunday's 2nd Round

MOHNTON, PA - RIS - Results of round 2 eliminations in Pro Stock at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Larry Morgan 0.464 6.996 196.03
 (L) George Marnell 0.489 7.050 195.52

2:34 PM and Morgan is on a tear this weekend, another
six, taking out Marnell and advancing him to the
semifinals... More overcast skies mean the performances may
step up another notch this afternoon... 75 degrees, 64%
humidity, 29.76 barometer.

 (W) Warren Johnson 0.457 6.985 196.03
 (L) Bruce Allen 0.458 7.045 195.05

WJ gets off the line with a tiny holeshot and a 1.024
60' time and never looked back...

 (W) Mike Bell 0.435 7.010 196.29
 (L) Kurt Johnson 0.476 7.001 197.02

Bell's got his work cut out for him here... but he's
up to it, a big headstart enough to win by 0.032 secs., or
about 9 feet. So Kurt's streak is ended, by a guy that had
never won a round in NHRA competition before today.

 (W) Jim Yates 0.463 6.967 196.93
 (L) Mike Edwards 0.443 7.026 196.29

Edwards needs a large holeshot here, and he only got a
medium... so now there are only four remaining... 2:40
PM

PRO STOCK

Sunday's 3rd Round

MOHNTON, PA - RIS - Results of round 3 eliminations in Pro Stock at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Mike Bell 0.409 7.020 196.03
 (L) Warren Johnson 0.467 6.964 197.84

      4:02 PM and WJ's great 1.024 in 60' wasn't enough to
overcome Bell's huge headstart... this was a nail-biter all the way
to the stripe, just 0.002 secs. at the finish, or about 5 inches.

 (W) Jim Yates 0.499 6.966 197.45
 (L) Larry Morgan 0.460 7.013 195.86

Larry Morgan gets out ahead of Yates, can he duplicate
Bell's upset??... Not today, the margin at the stripe here a big (by
comparison) 0.008 seconds, or just over 2 feet. So the guy
who'd never been past the first round is into the final, against the
defending event and Winston Champ... and it's going to be a
barn-burner!

PRO STOCK

Sunday's Fth Round

MOHNTON, PA - RIS - Results of final round eliminations in Pro Stock at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Jim Yates 0.464 6.966 198.06
 (L) Mike Bell 0.393(R) 7.008 196.37

5:37 PM ... The sun is low in the sky, the
temperature holding at 74 degrees... Ronnie Humphrey was
named Crew Chief of the Race for his efforts behind Mike
Bell today. Well, he knew he had to squeeze the tree for all it
was worth, and he came up just a wink too quick... That's
Yates' sixth win in nine final rounds this year, and moves him
nine rounds ahead of WJ in the points standings. Two wins in
two years for the McDonald's Firebird... Congrats!!

   (R) = Red light foul
