FEDERAL-MOGUL FUNNY CAR
Saturday's 1st RoundMOHNTON, PA - RIS - Results of round 1 eliminations in Federal-Mogul Funny Car at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed (W) Frank Manzo 0.455 5.751 248.13 (L) Fred Tigges 0.482 19.934 70.19 6:46 PM ... Tigges has one of the most beautiful machines on the property this weekend, certainly a candidate for Best Appearing... And that will be the only trophy he's in contention for, unfortunately, as the car got up on the wheelie bars then shook hard, all before the 60' mark... (W) Craig Gleason 0.481 6.073 224.66 (L) Skip Gladstone 0.530 6.027 229.47 Gladstone got perilously close to the left wall, while Gleason was skating and bouncing as well, but he managed to stay in the groove and that likely made the difference... And a small difference it was, just 0.003 secs. separating them at the finish, or about 13 inches... (W) Jim Lape 0.586 5.917 235.91 (L) David Rowe 0.511 6.647 182.55 Rowe had a clear lead at the start, but that evaporated quickly when he clicked it early, Lape roaring by for the big win... (W) Tony Bartone 0.463 5.768 248.89 (L) Brian Cunningham 0.462 6.370 221.18 Cunningham's machine is either called "Gone Ballistic" or "For Sale"... both signs are on the side. It would have been worth a lot more to a prospective buyer if he could have gotten past Bartone, but the New Yorker led this one from wire to wire... (W) Bob Newberry 0.501 5.852 247.18 (L) Paul Gill 0.476 6.311 216.13 Gill divides his time between the track and his metal fabricating business, while Newberry is a racer seven days a week... Newberry is very soft off the line, just 1.01 in 60', but he makes it up quickly and advances to the second round... (W) Todd Paton 0.520 5.887 242.91 (L) Bunny Burkett 0.534 6.213 228.48 Both these cars made just one lap in qualifying, but they're a long way apart, based on those numbers... And true to form, Paton sends Bunny & the Boys to the trailer, both cars strong to the finish but Paton with a little more mph. (W) Tim Slagle 0.468 5.954 239.23 (L) Scott Weney 0.511 6.971 138.14 Weney was right there until halftrack, but his car insisted on heading toward the centerline, and it was either lift or cross over it... so he lifted. (W) John Sieger 0.478 6.178 228.07 (L) Franny Monaghan Jr 0.477 8.519 100.41 Sieger was headed toward the wall early, and it looked like he was going to have to hand this one to Monaghan, when something went wrong with the Avenger and Sieger hung on for the upset win... That's the final pair, so it'll be just eight cars back for the second round tomorrow... 7:10 PM![]()
FEDERAL-MOGUL FUNNY CAR
Sunday's 2nd RoundMOHNTON, PA - RIS - Results of round 2 eliminations in Federal-Mogul Funny Car at the 13th annual Pioneer Electronics Keystone Nationals:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed (W) Frank Manzo 0.477 5.805 247.86 (L) Bob Newberry 0.470 5.870 246.57 1:46 PM, full sunshine now... man, what a crew chief's nightmare, the sun out brightly one minute and full cloud cover the next. The track surface temperature is 123 degrees right now, that's about as hot as these guys can stand. Manzo waited until the last minute to take the left side, then left right with Newberry. He drifted over against the left wall but never lifted, and managed a slim 0.05 sec win over the 'Newb... (W) Todd Paton 0.501 6.165 193.00 (L) Craig Gleason (Broke) Gleason is a no-show this round, so Paton goes for lane choice but has to pedal at midtrack, hurting his chances... then he got bigtime sideways on the top end, bouncing hard, and had to lift altogether... (W) Tony Bartone 0.504 5.763 249.44 (L) Jim Lape 0.452 6.517 157.64 Both northeasterners... And Lape drifts over toward the wall, more, more, and he finally had to wrestle the car back into the center of the lane, getting it sideways in the process... by that time Bartone was long gone. (W) Tim Slagle 0.489 5.950 239.68 (L) John Sieger 0.469 6.111 228.25 Neither driver getting a big advantage at the start, then the Roma Steel Erectors machine of Sieger drifts right and out of the groove... So the Jerr-Dan car takes a big win, and a trip into the semifinals... 1:58 PM![]()

(W) Frank Manzo 0.430 5.741 249.44 (L) Tony Bartone 0.475 5.815 248.07 Manzo cuts down the tree, and lays down a new track record both ends, ET and speed. And with a puff of smoke on the top end, Frank Manzo may just have wrapped up the Championship for '97... Paton's engine expired at 1000', the Safety Safari trucks roll to clean up the remains, most of which are well past the finishline... Manzo's had a great year, this his fourth national event win of '97. Congrats!!![]()
