Stone, Woods & Cook AA/GS '41 Willys

During the heyday of the AA/Gas Supercharged wars of the mid-1960s, the team of Fred Stone, Tim Woods, and Doug Cook campaigned a series of four Swindler A '41 Willys in the AA/GS and BB/GS classes and gained fame for their series of West Coast match races with the similar entries of archrival "Big John" Mazmanian. Interest was stirred by a series of letter-written challenges and counterchallenges printed in Drag News, which legend has it were written for both teams by automotive journalist Terry Cook.

The Stone, Woods & Cook entry at the museum features an early-model Chrysler Hemi that in 1965 replaced the more familiar Oldsmobile engines that the team ran for years. Utilizing the high-center-of-gravity body style that was popular then and necessary for traction, these cars were among the first doorslammers to run in the nine-second zone with speeds eventually exceeding 150 mph.
