Warren Johnson's 200-mph '97 Pontiac Pro Stocker

One of the newest cars on display at the NHRA Motorsports Museum but already permanently engraved in drag racing history is Warren Johnson's GM Performance Parts '97 Pontiac, the first Pro Stocker to break the 200-mph barrier. W.J. achieved the feat Friday, April 25, 1997, at NHRA's national event in Richmond during the second qualifying session. Earlier in the day, he had clocked a speed of 199.07 mph with an elapsed time of 6.94. After making changes in the final drive gears and transmission ratios and detuning the clutch, he recorded the historic times of 6.894, 200.13 mph, marks that were eclipsed in Sunday's first round of eliminations with numbers of 6.883, 200.53. Until the recent speed barrage at this year's national event in Richmond, W.J.-built engines had accounted for 44 of drag racing's 46 200-mph Pro Stock runs.
