Jon Capps tapped to drive
Jackson TA/Funny Car
Jon Capps, the younger brother of perennial Funny Car contender Ron Capps, has inked a deal with Rick Jackson to drive his Jackson Racing Top Alcohol Funny Car in 2002. The duo plan to battle for the Division 7 championship and are scheduled to compete in at least 12 races including the national events in Pomona, Phoenix, Indianapolis, Las Vegas, Sonoma, Houston, Dallas, Chicago, and Seattle.

"It seems like the perfect time to get involved full-time with NHRA drag racing," said Jon, who is licensed in both Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car. "The new deal with POWERade and the support of ESPN, in my opinion, has taken the sport of drag racing to a new level. It's an exciting time to launch a career."


Smith, Jensen re-sign multi-year partnership
Top Alcohol Funny Car racer Von Smith and Jensen Car Audio have agreed on a multi-year marketing program that the duo expects will allow the Oak Ridge, Tenn., racer to make even more noise in 2002.Smith, who has won numerous IHRA Funny Car titles and most recently the Top Alcohol Funny Car title at the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals, will again compete for the national championship as well as a NHRA Division 2 crown.

2002 Sportsman Drag Racing Series schedule
The NHRA has unveiled the 2002 schedule for the NHRA Sportsman Drag Racing Series. The season kicks off Feb. 22-23 in Division 2 at fabled Gainesville Raceway and concludes with the Division 7 finale at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Nov. 1-3.

Comp eliminator cylinder head usage
Following confusion on the use of the term "splayed valve," the NHRA Tech Department has produced a chart that defines the specific classes in which the various cylinder head configurations will be allowed for use in Competition eliminator in 2002.

Jones to drive for Darien & Meadows in '02
Top Alcohol Dragster driver Paul Jones will be filling the seat vacated by Brandon Bernstein in the Darien & Meadows A/Fuel Dragster for the 2002 season. The team made a hard run for the Championship with Bernstein at the wheel, and plans to take another shot at the title.

Comp class, index adjustments for 2002
The NHRA tech department has finalized changes to be made in Comp for the 2002 drag racing season. Prior to establishing new indexes for the new categories, adjustments have been made with regard to the description of some of the classes and weight breaks.
