FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

        PHOENIX-- Results Friday after the first rounds
of qualifying from Speedworld Motorplex, the fifth of six
events in the Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Seires.

        Randy Parks of Lombard, Ill., broke both ends of
the Speedworld Motorplex record Friday night when he led
all Federal-Mogul Dragsters during qualifying with a run
of 5.641 seconds at 247.54 mph in the NHRA Federal Mogul
Drag Racing Series Pacific Division event.

        Parks will join more than 400 race teams when
qualifying continues this morning at the track in Wittman,
which is about 40 miles northwest of Downtown Phoenix.

        Parks, who leads the country in Winston Drag Racing
Series national championship points, is followed by Rick
Santos of San Leandro, Calif.

        In Federal Mogul Funny Car, Wayne Stoeckel of
Madera, Calif, also set track records with an elapsed time
of 5.871 at 232.87. Defending Pacific Division champ John
Weaver is No. 2 and set the speed record at 236.48 mph.

Saturday night when he covered the quarter-mile on the
Wittman track in 5.600 seconds at 249.27 mph during the 
final day of qualifying in the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag
Racing Series event. Championship eliminations begin noon
today.  In Federal-Mogul Funny Cars, Lou Gasparrelli of
West Covina,Calif, holds the top spot for today's eliminations.

        Winners in the Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series
event at Speedworld Motorplex, in Wittman, Ariz., have
helped themselves in their next to last chance to gain
valuable divisional points in the chase for both national
and divisional championships. 

        In the Federal-Mogul Dragster category, Rick
Santos beat out Ken Zeal from Reno, Nev.  Santos ran a 5.745
e.t. at 243.04 mph to Zeal’s 5.722 e.t. at 191.06 mph.  

        Coming in to this event Santos, of San Leandro,
Calif., was ranked third in the national points standings
behind Randy Parks and Bobby Taylor.  Taylor went out in the
first round today and Parks did not make it past the semi-
final round.

        Federal-Mogul Funny Car driver Lou Gasparelli, of
West Covina, Calif., won the event today when Wayne Stoekel
of Madera, Calif., could not make the call.

        Joining Santos and Gasparelli in the Winners’ Circle
were top qualifier, Bob Turner of Riverside, Calif., in
Stock Eliminator; Doug Lambeck, of San Diego, Calif., in
Super Stock; Andy Mana, of Covina, Calif., in Competition
Eliminator; Dan Lafferty, of Wendell, Idaho, in Super Comp;
Mike Blodgett of Long Beach, Calif., in Super Gas; and Todd
Barton, from Norwalk, Calif., in Super Street.
