After the first day of qualifying at the NHRA Federal-Mogul
Drag Racing Series event at Sears Point Raceway Chess
Bushey and Wayne Stoeckel lead the Federal-Mogul Dragster
and Federal-Mogul Funny Car categories, respectively.

Bushey, driving his nitro-fueled and injected dragster,
claimed the provisional top qualifying spot in Federal-
Mogul Dragster with a new track record of 5.54-seconds
at a speed of 243.00-mph to lead a field of 21 dragsters.
In Federal-Mogul Funny Car Stoeckel is the early leader
over 19 Funny Cars with a 6.01-second, 232.67-mph run.  

Quickest run by a Funny Car came from Lou Gasparrelli,
who recorded a 5.92-second, 237.17-mph lap, but had the
pass disqualified because he crossed the centerline.

The Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars receive two
more qualifying laps on Saturday, at 3:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Saturday Qualifying Final:

After the final day of qualifying at the NHRA Federal-Mogul
Drag Racing Series event at Sears Point Raceway Chess
Bushey and Lou Gasparrelli lead the Federal-Mogul Dragster
and Federal-Mogul Funny Car categories, respectively.

Bushey, driving his nitro-fueled and injected dragster,
remained on the pole position with a track-record 5.54-
second, 243.00-mph lap recorded Friday evening.  Ken Zeal,
also driving a nitro-injected dragster, qualified second
with a 5.62-second run, while reigning NHRA Federal-Mogul
Dragster national champion Bobby Taylor settled in third
spot with a 5.65-second pass.  

After recording the quickest run Friday evening with a 5.92-
second run, only to have the run disallowed because he
crossed the centerline, Gasparrelli bounced back with the
pole-setting 5.97-second, 239.42-mph run Saturday evening.
Two other drivers, Mert Littlefield and Wayne Stoeckel,
also recorded runs in the five-second range at 5.97 and 5.98,
respectively.  Current NHRA Pacific divsion points leader
John Weaver missed the qualifying cut, running a best of 6.53
seconds to place 14th and out of Sunday's eliminations.

Former drag-boat racer Cliff Bingham suffered a spectacular
accident during qualifying in his Federal-Mogul Dragster,
driving his car off the end of the track after a 6.00-second,
234.77-mph run.  Although the race car suffered significant
damage in the spectacular-looking spill, Bingham climbed from
the vehicle uninjured.

Final eliminations for the Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny
Cars begin at 12 noon Sunday.

Advancing from the third-qualifying position, Bobby Taylor,
driving Gary Turner's GT Bicycles-sponsored entry, won the
Federal-Mogul Dragster category at the NHRA Federal-Mogul
Drag Racing Series event at Sears Point Raceway Sunday.
Joining Taylor in the winners' circle was Wayne Stoeckel
who claimed the Federal-Mogul Funny Car crown.

Taylor, the reigning Federal-Mogul Dragster national champion,
defeated Rick Santos in the final round with a 5.73-second,
246.33-mph run.  Santos, driving Jack O'Bannon's dragster,
red-lighted, catching a 0.346 foul start.

"We weren't the quickest car on the grounds, but we were the
most consistent," said Taylor after the final.  

"Rick's a great racer; we'd raced each other at Dallas earlier
this year and I'd put a 0.402 reaction time on him at that race.
I can't say for sure, but I'd guess he was thinking about that
race and didn't want to get beat at the starting line."

Despite losing to Santos in the first round of eliminations,
Frank Pedregon retained his points lead for the NHRA Pacific
Division Federal-Mogul Dragster championship.

A victory over first-time finalist Ron August Jr. moved Stoeckel
into the Pacific Division Funny Car championship lead.  Although
August reacted quicker to the green 'go' light Stoeckel was able
to drive by at mid-track and record a 5.94-second lap, the
quickest run by a Federal-Mogul Funny Car over the weekend.  

August lost traction at half track and momentarily had to lift
off the throttle, slowing to a 6.27-second run.
