After the final day of qualifying at the NHRA Federal- Mogul Drag Racing Series presented by Les Schwab Tire Centers/Dairy Farmers of Oregon event at Woodburn Dragstrip Bobby Taylor and Bucky Austin remain in the lead of the Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car categories, respectively. Taylor of Laguna Hills, Calif., driving Gary Turner's GT Bicycles dragster, claimed the pole position with a 5.62- second run recorded Friday evening. Taylor backed up that pass with a 5.65-second run Saturday. San Leandro, Calif.'s Rick Santos, at the wheel of Jack O'Bannon's dragster, is second with a 5.64-second run, also recorded Friday. Santos remains Taylor's closest competition having recorded a 5.66-second lap Saturday. Tiffani Hyland's bid for the NHRA Northwest division championship suffered a blow when she failed to qualify for Sunday's eliminations. Hyland, of Springfield, Ore., recorded a best run of 5.82 seconds but fell short of the 5.78-second bump spot held, ironically, by Hyland's championship rival, Federal Way, Wash.'s Mark Hentges. After resetting the Woodburn Dragstrip Funny Car track record at 5.74 seconds Friday, Austin consolidated his position at the top of the qualifying sheets Saturday with a 5.80-second lap. No other drivers came close to matching Austin's pace, although Austin's nephew, Pat Austin of Tacoma, Wash., did qualify third with a 5.84-second run. West Covina, Calif.'s Lou Gasparrelli remained in second place with a 5.83-second run, also recorded Friday. Final eliminations for the Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars begin at 12 noon Sunday.
