Bill Hynes, Fairview, Texas, and Vern Moats, Des Moines,
Iowa,  were the top qualifiers Friday at the $144,325
NHRA Champion Auto Stores Federal-Mogul Drag Racing
Series at Brainerd International Raceway (BIR).

        Hynes led the Federal-Mogul Dragster category
with an elapsed time of 5.817 second at 245.85 mph.
Hynes edged Randy Parks for the No.1 spot by nine
thousandths of a second.  Parks’ elapsed time was a
5.826.

        Moats, the defending NHRA Division 5 champion,
drove his Dodge Avenger to the quickest and fasted run
in the Federal-Mogul Funny Car category.  Moats covered
the quarter-mile in 5.929 at 243.38 mph.  Cy Chesterman,
who is seeking his third straight win at BIR, is qualified
fourth with a 6.234 at 168.64.

        Qualifying continues Saturday with two sessions
at 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.  time trials and qualifying for the
other Sportsman classes are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Final eliminations start at 10:30 a.m. Sunday with Federal-
Mogul Dragster and Funny Car eliminations starting a 1 p.m.

Stores Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series at Brainerd
International Raceway (BIR).

        Chesterman produced a record-setting run
Saturday to qualify No. 1 in the Federal-Mogul Car
category.  Chesterman drove his Pontiac Trans-Am to a
quarter-mile elapsed time of 5.760 seconds at a speed
of 251.43 mph. His speed mark was a BIR track record
for Federal-Mogul Funny Cars. Chesterman is seeking his
third straight win at BIR.

        Vern Moats, who led the Funny Car category after
Friday’s session, dropped to fourth with a 5.929 at 243.38.

        Parks was the No.  1 qualifier in the Federal-Mogul
Dragster category with a 5.670 at 247.22.  Darryl Hitchman,
of Hanford, Calif., was second with a 5.737 at 227.03.

        Final eliminations for the Federal-Mogul classes
start at 1 p.m. Eliminations for the other Sportsman classes
are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

	Cy Chesterman, Sioux City, Iowa, and Randy Parks, Lombard,
Ill., were the big winners Sunday at the $144,325 NHRA
Division 5 Champion Auto Stores Federal-Mogul Drag Racing
Series, contested at Brainerd International Raceway.

	Chesterman was the winner in the Federal-Mogul Funny
Car category while Parks won in the Federal-Mogul Dragster
category.  

	It was the third straight year that Chesterman captured
the Funny Car championship at BIR. He drove his Pontiac Trans
Am to a final-round victory over Johnny Gray, of Carlsbad, N.M.
Chesterman covered the quarter-mile in 5.863 seconds at 247.02
mph. Gray's Pontiac was clocked at 5.999 at 243.50.  

	The victory was also Chesterman's second Division 5 win of
the year. His other victory was in Topeka, Kan. in late April.

	Parks claimed his first Dragster championship at BIR with
a close final-round win over Allan Hartley, of Omaha, Neb.
Parks covered the quarter-mile in the final with an elapsed
time of 5.684 at 247.23 mph. Hartley, who defeated Parks in
last year's final at BIR, was a tick slower with a run of
5.709 at 234.47.

	The victory was Parks' seventh career divisional win and
the second of the season. He won a divisional race earlier in
the year in Indianapolis.        

	Both Chesterman and Parks were the No. 1 qualifiers in
their respective categories.
