Advancing from the 1st qualifying position, Randy Parks won the Federal-Mogul Dragster Category at the NHRA Federal- Mogul Drag Racing Series event at Indianapolis Raceway Park Sunday. Joining Parks in the winners' circle was John Lawson who claimed the Federal-Mogul Funny Car crown. Facing Bill Reichert in the final round of Federal-Mogul Dragster, Randy Parks won with a 5.73-second, 244-mph pass to beat Reichert to the finish line. John Lawson's victory in the Federal-Mogul Funny Car came at the expense of class-rookie Jeff Craig who made his racing debut this weekend. In the final, Lawson recorded a 6.90-second, 241-mph run to take the win. FUNNY CAR ROOKIE REACHES FINALS When Jeff Craig entered the Indianapolis Raceway Park grounds with his brand-new NHRA Federal-Mogul Funny Car ride Thursday, little did he believe he would be competing in the funny car finals at 10 p.m. Sunday night. Craig, a 27-year-old Daleville, Ind., resident, made it all the way to the funny car finals of the Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event at IRP, where he lost to champion John Lawson by eight one-hundreds of a second. In the process, however, Craig ran the fastest quarter-mile of his life, a 5.98 second run at 232.97 mph. Craig was licensed in Federal-Mogul Funny Car only last Wednesday, and has not received his official license in the mail from NHRA as of yet. "I felt a lot of pressure as I waited in the staging lanes to make my run, but once the motor fired it was easy to concentrate," said Craig. "It's been an awesome experience, really, and I have to thank my family for helping me get here." Craig's father, Bryant, is the car owner. His wife and two kids were in attendance as he made his brilliant debut. Craig, a regular at the Muncie (Ind.) Dragway in 1996, plans to run the entire NHRA North Central division schedule this year, and compete in the NHRA U.S. Nationals at IRP and the Pontiac Excitement Nationals at National Trail Raceway near Columbus, OH.
