Friday Qualifying:

Friday after the first round of qualifying at Edgewater Sports Park, the fifth of six events in the in the 1997 NHRA Federal-Mogul North Central Drag Racing Series: After the initial rounds of qualifying for Super Stock and Stock, Ohio racers Jeff Sexton and Carol Yacavone lead their respective categories. Sexton, of Fairborn, ran more than a second under his NHRA Index with a quarter- mile elapsed time of 8.991 seconds in his Super Stock/AX ‘84 Chevrolet Camaro. Meanwhile, Yacavone pushed her Loveland-based L/Stock Automatic ‘78 Pontiac to within a tick from being a second under her 13.00 class index with a run of 12.007. Qualifying for nearly 600 drivers continues tomorrow at 10 a.m. in all eight Federal-Mogul racing categories. Competition Eliminator drivers will take their first shot of the event, qualifying at 4:30 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m. The 250 mph Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Federal- Mogul Funny Cars will do likewise at 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. Gates at Edgewater Sports Park open at 9 a.m. Saturday and 8 a.m. Sunday. Saturday rundown after the final rounds of qualifying at Edgewater Sports Park, the fifth of six events in the 1997 NHRA Federal-Mogul North Central Drag Racing Series: When qualifying finished Saturday night at Edgewater Sports Park, Federal-Mogul Dragster driver Jeff Wilson covered the field at 5.666, 248.07 mph. Top qualifier in the Federal-Mogul Funny Car category, Kim Fritts, recorded a 6.033, 237.65 mph run to lead the field going into tomorrow’s finals. Top qualifiers in other Federal-Mogul categories were Brian Browell in Competition Eliminator; Melissa Butler in Super Stock; and Carol Butler in Stock Eliminator. Final results Sunday at Edgewater Sports Park, the fifth of six events in the in the 1997 NHRA Federal- Mogul North Central Drag Racing Series: The final day of racing began with hopes of victory for 564 drivers in the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event here, but, so far, only three have reached that goal. In the highly competitive world of Federal-Mogul Dragster, current national and North Central Series points leader Randy Parks was defeated in the second round by eventual runner-up Bill Reichert, who was in turn upset by rising star Jeff Wilson, 5.718, 247.04 to 5.709, 242.91 mph. It was Wilson’s second win of the year. Federal-Mogul Funny Car racer Kim Fritts and his Wise Speed Shop Pontiac broke through after a few final round appearances and took his first win, beating newlywed Todd Paton in the final. Joining Wilson and Paton in the Federal-Mogul Winners’ Circle were veteran John Lingenfelter in Comp Eliminator. As of 8 pm, with 23 other cars remaining in five categories the event is on hold for weather, light rain, that will force a decision on postponement within one hour. Incident: Harry Sheehan’s SS/FA ‘71 Corvette did a pirouette on its rear bumper and rolled onto its top on Saturday. The Brownsville, Pa., veteran was okay; but the car needs body work.
