Friday Qualifying: 

Qualifying began today at Montgomery Motorsports Park for
the fifth of six events in the NHRA Southeast Division of
the Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series.  Darrell Russell and
Tony Bartone lead the Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-
Mogul Funny Car categories going into the second day of
qualifying.

Russell claimed the number one position in the Federal-
Mogul Dragster category with a 5.659 second, 247.59 mph run.
He leads Greg Roberts who follows in the second spot with a
5.701 second, 246.91 mph pass.  A pass of 6.109 seconds at
238.41 mph put Bartone in the top qualifying spot in
Federal-Mogul Funny Car ahead of John Lawson who qualified
second with a 6.242 second, 188.67 mph.   

Randy Daniels from Grantsboro, NC captured the number one
qualifying position in Competition Eliminator with a run of
8.409 seconds while Bob Dennis of Shorter, AL and Greg
Row out of Bridgeton, NC are on top of the Super Stock and
Stock categories respectively.

The Federal Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars continue their
qualifying on Saturday with runs at 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
Racing begins at 11:00 a.m. with spectator gates opening
at 9:00 a.m.

Saturday Qualifying Final: 


After the final qualifying rounds at Montgomery Motorsports
Park for the fifth of six events in the NHRA Southeast
Division of the Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series.  Jeremy
Torstveit and John Lawson lead the Federal-Mogul Dragster
and Federal-Mogul Funny Car categories going into the
second day of qualifying.

Torstveit claimed the number one position in the Federal-
Mogul Dragster category with a 5.636 second, 247.79 mph run.
He leads Jay Payne who follows in the second spot with a
5.742 second, 250.13 mph pass.  A pass of 5.966 seconds at
244.03 mph put Lawson in the top qualifying spot in Federal-
Mogul Funny Car ahead of Tony Bartone who qualified second
with a 6.047 second, 238.03 mph.   

Ian Landier ofChardon, OH, captured the number one
qualifying position in the Competition Eliminator category
with a run of  8.708 seconds while Bob Dennis of Shorter, AL
and Greg Row out of Bridgeton, NC held onto their number one
spots in the Super Stock and Stock categories respectively.

Final eliminations for Federal Mogul Dragsters and Funny Cars
are set for 1:00 p.m.  with eliminations in all other
categories beginning at 10:00 a.m. Spectator gates opening at
9:00 a.m.

Sunday Results: 

Michael Gunderson all but mathematically wrapped up the
Federal-Mogul Dragster Southeast Division Title with a
win over Jay Payne at Montgomery Motorsports Park. Joining
Gunderson in the winner’s circle was Tony Bartone who
claimed the Federal-Mogul Funny Car category and had
already clinched the Southeast Championship.

Facing Payne in the final round of Federal-Mogul Dragster,
Gunderson won with a 5.673 second pass, at  247.38 mph
pass to beat Payne to the line. Bartone’s victory in
Federal-Mogul Funny Car came at the expense of John Lawson,
the number one qualifier.  In the final, Bartone recorded
a pass of  6.050 seconds, at 241.09 mph to take home the
win.

1992 NHRA Rookie of the Year and former Top Fuel racer
Dannielle DePorter initiated her NHRA come back with an
upset victory over number one qualifier Jeremy Torstveit
in round one.  DePorter  ran her Federal-Mogul Dragster to
a 6.128 e.t. at 216.45 mph to Torstveit’s 6.166 e.t. before 
loosing to Gunderson in round two with a 5.983 e.t. to
event winner Gunderson’s 5.879 e.t.
