Friday Qualifying: 

        Results Friday after the first round of qualifying
at Numidia Raceway, the fifth of six events in the
North East Division in the 1997 NHRA Federal-Mogul
Drag Racing Series:
        After the initials rounds of qualifying for
Competition Eliminator, Stock Eliminator and Super Stock,
Kevin Robb, Dennis Chapman and Jim Barburka lead their
respective categories.
        Qualifying continues tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. for all
eight sportsman categories.  Federal-Mogul Dragsters and
Federal-Mogul Funny Cars begin qualifying at 3 p.m. with a
second run at 6 p.m.  Gates at Numidia Raceway open at 8 a.m.
Saturday and 8:30 a.m. Sunday.

Saturday Qualifying Final: 


        Results Saturday after the final rounds of qualifying at
Numidia  Raceway, the fifth of six events in the North East
Division in the 1997 NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series:
        When qualifying finished today at Numidia Raceway, Federal-
Mogul Dragster driver Rich McPhillips had set a track elapsed time
(e.t.) record en route to being the top qualifier in the class.
McPhillips’ record run was 5.720 e.t. and a speed of 224.10 mph.
Top qualifier in the Federal-Mogul Funny Car category, Bob Newberry,
also made a run in the five-second range, running an e.t. of 5.999
and a speed of 239.36 mph.
        Top qualifiers in other Federal-Mogul categories were Kevin
Robb in Competition Eliminator; Jim Boburka in Super Stock; and
Dennis Chapman in Stock Eliminator.
        Finals begin here tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.  Gates will open at
8:00 a.m. and dragsters and funny cars make their first rounds of
eliminations at noon.

Sunday Results: 

        Results Sunday after the finals at Numidia Raceway,
the fifth of six events in the North East Division in
the 1997 NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series:
        The final day of racing in the NHRA Federal-
Mogul Drag Racing Series event here had everything you
need to make great competition.  The final round
featured arch-rivals going against each other and a guy
who hasn’t won an event since the 80s and has never won
a divisional-level event.
        In the Federal-Mogul Funny Car category,
divisional point leader, Frank Manzo, took on the guy who
is chasing him, Bob Newberry.  Things looked good for
Newberry going into the finals.  He was the top qualifier
and had earned the right to choose his lane.  In the end
however, Manzo came out on top yet again.  Manzo ran an
elapsed time (e.t.) of 5.973 at 235.54 mph against
Newberry’s 6.302 e.t. at 203.34 mph.
        As for Federal-Mogul Dragster, it was a
Cinderella story from  the start.  Ken Winward, who has
been racing for upwards of 30 years, was the number eight
qualifier yesterday.  But, today,  he systematically mowed
down the competition.  In the final round, he went up
against number two qualifier Jeremy Torstveit.  Winward
ran a 6.071 e.t. at 230.71 mph against Torstveit’s 7.889
e.t. at 112.64 mph.   
        Joining Newberry and Winward in the Winners’
Circle were Dave Northrop in Comp Eliminator; Bob Hertline
in Super Stock; Paul Dilcher in Stock; George Tamasi, Jr.
in Super Comp; John DiBartolomeo in Super Gas; and Joe
Redunski in Super Street.
