Sears Point to host Div. 7 FMDRS event

06/26/01

Sears Point Raceway will host the Bank of the West NHRA Festival of Fire, a round of the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series, June 29-July 1. The event is the fifth of six in Pacific Division competition and will feature more than 500 drivers in eight racing categories competing for points leading to national and divisional championships. Categories in competition are 250-mph Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Federal-Mogul Funny Cars, Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street.

With just two races to go in the Pacific Division NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series season, it looks like division titles are still up for grabs. In Federal-Mogul Dragster competition, there appears to be a battle brewing between Mike Strasburg and rookie driver Brandon Bernstein, son of drag racing legend Kenny Bernstein. But over on the Federal-Mogul Funny Car side, it looks like Steve Gasparrelli has the edge over the other drivers.

In Pacific division Federal-Mogul Dragster competition, Strasburg, of Lindon, Utah, won the season opener at Firebird International Raceway in Phoenix and was runner-up to Lake Forest, Calif., resident Bernstein at Famoso Raceway in Bakersfield, Calif. Bernstein scored runner-up points to Duane Shields, of Las Vegas, at the season's second race at Tucson International Raceway in Ariz. Shields and Rick Santos, who hails from San Leandro, Calif., are the only other drivers to make it to the Pacific Division winner's circle. They both claim the Northwest Division as their home turf.

In Federal-Mogul Funny Car, West Covina, Calif., resident Gasparrelli has two wins and a runner-up on the season. He won in Tucson and at Sacramento Raceway Park in Calif. and came in second to Pat Austin of Tacoma, Wash., at the season opener in Phoenix. Only Hanford, Calif., resident John Weaver is close to Gasparrelli, with a win in Bakersfield and a runner-up in Tucson.

Gates at Sears Point Raceway open at 7 a.m. each day. Qualifying and time trials begin at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday. F/M Dragsters and Funny Cars are scheduled to run at 3 p.m. Friday, and have two qualifying passes Saturday, at noon and 5:30 p.m. There will be a fireworks show Saturday night at 9 p.m. Eliminations begin Sunday at 8 a.m. with F/M Dragsters and Funny Cars running at noon.

Tickets are $5 Friday, $25 Saturday and $20 Sunday. Saturday's ticket includes the fireworks show. A three-day pass is $45. Children 12 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.

Sears Point Raceway is located north of San Rafeal at the junction of Highways 37 and 121. For more information, call Sears Point Raceway, (707) 938-8448.

After this weekend's event at Sears Point Raceway in Sonoma, Calif., the final Pacific Division NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event will be in Las Vegas. The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will host the season finale Nov. 2-4.
