Thunder On The Mountain at Division 5 FMDRS

Bandimere Speedway will host Conoco Thunder on the Mountain, a round of the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series, June 22-24. The event is the third of six in NHRA West Central Division competition and will feature more than 550 cars in eight categories, including 250-mph Federal-Mogul Dragsters and Federal-Mogul Funny Cars. Drivers will earn points leading to divisional and national championships and compete for a share of $148,495 in cash and contingency awards.

Winners of last year's event were Billy Bybee in FM Dragster, Jay Payne in FM Funny Car, Charlie Stewart in Competition, Ritch Aherns in Super Stock, Bob Swan in Stock, Steve Swenson in Super Comp, Mark Philbrick in Super Gas, and Justin Beauer in Super Street.

Gates at Bandimere Speedway will open at 8:30 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Racing starts at 10 a.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday. FM Dragsters and Funny Cars will make one qualifying pass Friday at 4:15 p.m. and two more Saturday at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Sunday, gates open at 8 a.m. and eliminations begin at 9:30 a.m. FM Dragsters and Funny Cars begin eliminations at noon.

Tickets, including pit pass, are $10 Friday, $20 Saturday and $22 Sunday. A three-day pass is $45 and a two-day pass (Saturday and Sunday) is $35. Children 12 and under are $6 each day.

WHAT: Conoco Thunder on the Mountain, a round of the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series, where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships. Categories include: Federal-Mogul Dragster, Federal-Mogul Funny Car, Competition, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The event is the third of six in West Central Division competition. It is also the first of two Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series events at Bandimere Speedway.

SCHEDULE: Time trials and qualifying schedule for the Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series:

FRIDAY, June 22 -- Gates open at 8:30 a.m. Qualifying and time trials begin at 10 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car qualifying sessions are scheduled at 4:15 p.m.

SATURDAY, June 23 -- Gates open at 8:30 a.m. Final qualifying and time trials are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car qualifying sessions are scheduled at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.

SUNDAY, June 24 -- Gates open at 8 a.m. Eliminations begin at 9:30 a.m. Eliminations for Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car begin at noon.

PURSE: The NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series competitors will compete for cash and contingency awards of $148,495, part of the 43-race, $6.5 million series.

BONUS PROGRAMS:
FEDERAL-MOGUL POINTS FUND -- a $561,000 point fund from Federal-Mogul, which will be shared by 2001 Federal-Mogul divisional champions and Federal-Mogul national champions. Divisional awards include $8,500 each to the Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car champions; $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven Federal-Mogul national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

SEALED POWER LOW QUALIFIER BONUS -- a $167,500 overall bonus fund from Federal-Mogul's Sealed Power brand to the low qualifiers at each of the 43 Federal-Mogul events and the 24 NHRA national events: $1,000 each in Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car; $200 each in Competition and Super Stock; and $100 in Stock.

FEATURES: More than 550 drivers in the eight racing categories. Eight-car fields in Federal-Mogul Dragster and Federal-Mogul Funny Car, featuring five-second, 250 mph side-by-side racing.
