White hopes for strong showing in hometown

09/27/01

To NHRA Federal Mogul racer Marc White, every race is important. But, like in any sport, playing in front of the hometown fans makes you try that much harder. White will be doing just that as he will be striving for his second national event win of the year during this weekend's NHRA Nationals at Route 66 Raceway just outside of Chicago.

White, from just down the road in Glendale Heights, Ill., hopes the third time is the charm this weekend. In two outings at Route 66 Raceway this year, White and the Etterman Racing Team have come away with two semifinal finishes. With cool weather and strong competition in store, White plans to turn the Etterman Racing Firebird up an extra notch.

"At the race here earlier in the year, we were able to run some mid .60's," said White. "We want to go into this weekend with the same tune-up because the air will be somewhat similar. If everyone shows up that is on the entry list, it's gonna take mid .60s just to be a player. We'll just try to run our car in those kind of numbers, and hopefully it will work out for us."

The quickest elapsed time of the year thus far has been a 5.61 posted by Steve Gasparrelli in Pomona. White feels with the caliber of cars that will be on hand, someone will break into the 5.50 zone, and he hopes to be one of them.

"They are talking about weather conditions with a high of about 65," stated White. "If that happens, I think we could definitely see the first 5.50 run of the year with the new rules at this race. Can we do it? Yes, we can definitely do it. Will we? You have to make a pretty good lap to run a 5.50 in one of these things, so it will just be who hits the combination. That's something we definitely want to do. We want to run in the 5.50s before the year is over with. We're definitely going to try."
