FMFC and FMD rules unchanged for '02

09/20/01

As a result of rule changes made in the Federal-Mogul classes for 2001, there has been a renewed interest in the Federal-Mogul Funny Car and Federal-Mogul Dragster categories. Several NHRA divisions have reported increased car counts in the two premier sportsman classes at the division event level.

In speaking with many racers in those classes, many feel that rules stabilization would benefit the continued growth in popularity and participation in the Federal-Mogul classes. Therefore, going into 2002 there will be no rule changes in the Federal-Mogul Funny Car and Federal-Mogul Dragster categories.

However, at the request of Federal-Mogul Dragster racers, the following two areas that were to apply only through 2001 will now be extended into 2002:

  • Federal-Mogul Dragster racers may continue to use larger engines than the standard (466 cubic inches at 2,025 pounds minimum weight) by adding five (5) pounds to the stated minimum weight for each additional cubic inch over 466.

  • Federal-Mogul Dragster racers with small-block engines with 4.50 inches or less cylinder bore spacing will continue to run at 4.05 or more pounds per cubic inch and a minimum weight of 1,700 pounds (as indicated in the 2001 rules revisions).

Two areas of concern that NHRA officials have in the Federal-Mogul categories are oil containment and oiling-system preventive maintenance procedures. NHRA officials have talked with Federal-Mogul racers and engine builders alike regarding oil containment problems. As a result of racer and engine builder input, the NHRA has put together the following list of preventive maintenance procedures that will be mandated in an effort to reduce the possibilities of oil down situations with Federal-Mogul cars:

  • Valve cover gaskets, o-rings, etc., must be completely bonded/glued to either the valve covers or cylinder head sealing surface.

  • All valve-cover-to-cylinder-head fasteners must be studs and nuts in lieu of bolts where possible.

  • Vent tube adapters on the valve covers must either be fully welded to the valve covers or incorporate a gasket or o-ring that is bonded/glued to the adapter or valve cover.

  • Twist-on/quick-disconnect fittings between the vent tubes/hoses and the valve cover vent tube adapters must incorporate a secondary locking device such as an hasp pin, ball-lock pin, etc. Tape is not considered to be a satisfactory primary or secondary locking device.

  • Double clamps are needed on both ends of all hoses used in the vent system, including dry sump vents.

  • Minimum 1 ¼-inch inside-diameter hoses from each valve cover to catch can and/or frame rail. Minimum 1 ¼-inch inside diameter hoses to both catch can inlets from frame rail.

  • Spark plug tubes that penetrate the valve covers must have a restraining device to contain the tube in the valve cover in the event the spark plug is discharged. (SFI 14.4 valve cover restraints satisfy this requirement).

  • Minimum catch can capacity for Federal-Mogul Dragsters should be an eight-quart sump (i.e., below the bottom baffle). Minimum catch can capacity for Federal-Mogul Funny Car should be a four-quart sump when valve-cover discharges are routed through the upper frame rails, otherwise the same capacity as Federal-Mogul Dragster. (The large capacity circular-style catch can, or a twin-style catch can configuration set up in series, are both considered very effective.) Catch cans must have adequate internal baffling. Minimum inlet configuration should be two 1 1/8-inch inside diameter, or equivalent square-inch area. Minimum vent outlet configuration should be two 1 1/8-inch inside diameter or equivalent square-inch area.

  • Diapers need to be specific to the oil pan and pump configuration being used. Diaper must fit and be used as appropriately designed for the specific application.
